As per title. I removed my knackered garage roof last August, and it's been sat under the trees in my garden since. The wife is complaining that it'll kill the grass (which it already has), so I'm looking at removing it.

I kitted myself up with dust masks and strong rubble bags, but am not 100% confident in my ability to break it up and remove it safely. That and I can't really be arsed.

So, has anyone here had a similar amount shifted and at what cost?

I had an entire garage same size removed quoted £800 quid.. The guys that came to do the job were total cowboys i think. After the reputable spiel the salesman did they had no or little PPE gear nothing... Its their lives I guess. They did a good job to be fair.

I think most council dumps are obliged to take it free of charge, I think mine still does although with recent budget cuts it might all have changed.

For just a roof id do it yourself. its probably not the ultra dangerous type. I cant imagine it costing more than £200 . Probably end up on some farmers land somewhere... Really just call get a quote, 4 or 5 bags worth... id guess

Cheers chaps.

I don't know what grade it is, but I've been told by my wife's uncle that it's likely very low risk (he's a civil engineer and had a look at it a while back). Still, I'm not totally confident that I'd handle it safely enough, especially as it needs breaking up for me to be able to remove it.

Trying to get people come round to give quotes as I type this, so hopefully will have an answer soon.

My grandad died of asbestosis, it didn't look pretty. If I was in your situation, I would pay to have it professionally removed, regardless of it's grade.

The Garage roof on the house we bought recently is also corrugated Asbestos.
Seems like its just pinned/screwed into the overhead beams.
Surely if the screws and such are removed carefully then the "boards" can be
transported as is?

Was thinking of replacing it with just that nasty corrugated plastic until we have the cash to do the extension.

Like **** will I if it costs £800 :(

It looks like fairly strong boards, must be for a roof surely?
If I had known this in advance I'd have pestered the sellers to get rid before we bought lol :p

Firstly don't break it up.
Secondly you will pay the council tip even if you can get it there and they have strict limits on how much they accept too.
Thirdly just pick up the yellow pages and ring some specialists, only they can tell you the cost.

No free collections here in West Sussex. :(

It's free to take it to my local tip though, but I can't fit it in my car and it must be (double IIRC) wrapped for them to accept it. I'm not liking the idea of breaking it up myself, despite having adequate PPE (I have some good quality particle masks and disposable overalls from work that I usually use for DIY, but are for harsh, dry particulate environments).

Either wait for it to rain or hose it down first, that or stand upwind while you smash it :p

Are you 100% sure it is asbestos?

Asbestos was banned in 1985 so if the roofing material is less than 27 years old, it's not asbestos. If I recall from my days in the waste management business, if it's between that and about 40-45 years old, it may or may not be asbestos and if it's older than that, it almost certainly is asbestos.

A lot of people still refer to modern corrugated roofing as 'asbestos' when it actually contains no asbestos.

Might be worth checking how old it is.
