(OK, I'll stop going on-and-on about my working holiday in oz....)

However, on the way to Australia there's a choice of stop in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong (I think) or Bangkok. I don't want to pass up the chance to stay in one of those cities for a few days, but I will be travelling on my own and I suppose I'm looking for some advice!

Which city should I go to (I've pencilled in Tokyo), how long should I stay (couple of days or one week?), how much money will I need, is it easy to meet people if you're on your own, is it easy to find accommodation (at the end of May) etc?

Ideally I'm looking for replies from some one who has "been there, done that" (t-shirt optional)!

If youre comfortable not being able to communicate then go to tokyo...id say its the best city out of that lot...but if you are worried about speaking to people then go to hongkong..

Well I don't know, if I was only there for a few days maybe it wouldn't bother me if I couldn't speak to any one! Is HK expensive? The travel agent didn't recommend it, he said it was "just" a city... or maybe that was singapore he was talking about.

One thing I'd like to do is take a stroll through somewhere with old (and free) sights and sounds, so maybe Tokyo would be a better option. Although I'm a bit worried about the expense, particularly getting somewhere to stay for a few days. What's the ideal length of time to stay? 2 days? 3-4? A week? I'm new to all this travelling on my own!

HK is cheap...but yeah it is just a city...same as singapore...

Tokyo is the best option i reckon..thats where id go...unless you like hookers of course, then take the bangkok route :o

I love Singapore but I think it's a place for couples/family as it's quite impersonal and you may get a little lonely/bored.

Yeah it has to be Tokyo. Although all are good.

I would take loads of money and buy some gadgets, I imagine it is wuite expensive being a city.

If it was me first choice would be Tokyo, then Hong Kong. Wouldn't be interested in going to Singapore really.

bangkok has some awsome sights.

indeed it does... but i didn't go to any of those bars when i was there unfortunatly :(

My choise would proberbly be hong kong, Tokyo while it looks amazing isn't all that welcoming to foreigners, my housemates just come back, and while he had an amazing time he said the amount of places that wouldn't let you in if you weren't japanese, or atleast acompanied by a japanese person was insain

Booked my flights!

Decided on Hong Kong. Tokyo was an extra €275 so I went for the cheaper option!

Is it me or did he just ignore everyone's advice?!

ha ha... have fun just don't post a 'Hong Kong - anyone been?' thread tomorrow ;)

Eh, it's just you.

Some people said Tokyo, others Hong Kong. No one really recommended Singapore.
So when I was booking and was told HK and Singapore were much cheaper I went with HK.

"HK just a city!"

Large danglies! HK is a great place full of incredible sights and sounds and a fascinating insight into China while remaining accessible to the Westerner. Any travel agent who can say HK is "just a city|" hasn't been there or has an ulterior motive for his own suggestion.

Just a city as in it is just a city...almost a city state...You cant simply drive out of HK and explore the rest of China...Its not within a wider, accessible environment...Tokyo you can go all over japan...bangkok you can travel around the various places...singapore and HK are just cities.
