asking for a free upgrade on flights.

You can always pay for an upgrade if available, but bare in mind that it's still full price.

The other issue is that Airlines are less likely to just upgrade people (who aren't good standing account holders who fly frequently) because at the end of the day people or businesses have paid a lot of money for people to go business class and above. Thus it's not just a case of filling up the seats because they are empty, as that's not fair on people who have paid.

I've flown business class numerous times and that's certainly the case.

The only other time it has worked was by shear luck. I was seated on a long flight to Australia and was dismayed to find myself next to a young couple with a screaming baby and the stewardess asked if I wouldn't mind moving up into business/first class (can't remmeber which now) to give the couple more room with their baby.

That must have been a nightmare scenario, people are so inconsiderate bringing babies onto planes, dogs are one thing but babies just ruin the flight for everyone.

I have to say there's nothing I hate more when I get onto a plane than listening to a baby cry for hours on end. However, it's not like some people have a choice. How else are they going to travel?

Tell that to people travelling for medical treatment. Not that the reason really matters, it doesn't make it ok to ruins someone's flight regardless of why they are travelling.

I 'd guess that if it's a necessity to fly for medical treatment then a crying baby is probably the least of your worries

If you want the luxury of silence, pay the extra for a business or first class seat. I think you'll find that a significant number of a plane's passengers (excluding charters) are not travelling on a holiday.

Set of decent (I like Shure) in ear headphones. Sorted. Babies aren't a problem.

I tried some Sennheiser active noise cancelling headphones the other day (mainly as I couldn't find the headphone jack on a Lufthansa business class seat) after a couple too many beers to celebrate a trip going well. Not impressed, maybe the Bose ones are better? (but then I've always heard Bose stands for Buy Other Stereo Equipment...).

I have a set of cheap JVC noise cancelling headphones which I use to help me sleep. They work pretty good. It's amazing how noisy it can get on the plane. A while ago I flew with Delta in business class and they gave out Bose noise cancelling headsets. I was very impressed with them. Not far from complete silence. I might invest in a pair as they can really help when it comes to sleeping, especially if stuck at the back of the plane where it's a lot noisier.

do they allow you to upgrade to business class right there and then or does it have to be done in advance?

or is it just on the chance that there is space?

Normally has to be done there and then - it is always about availability. Most airlines try to overbook flights as people cancel at the last minute. If all people booked for economy do arrive and business is not full they will upgrade as needed.

nice thread once I kicked up a fuss on a Air Uzbekistan and they put me on First Class all of 2 hours

was okay but I bet Emirates, British Airways or Virgin would have better seating

Yes but you will have to pay the 'full price' and it will probably be north of £1000 on top of your ticket on a trip to the states. (Unless you are already on full Y in which case it will be less but still comfortably in the hundreds)

I don't think they do in this day in age, with computerized booking systems. Certainly with major chartered airlines.

You don't book seats with BA and turn up to the airport to find out they have overbooked and you will have to wait for the next flight. I've not even had that with Easyjet or Ryanair for that matter.

It certainly does happen these days. In fact it happened to me on a BA flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg about 18 months ago. I did get onto the flight in the end, but was upgraded because I had to hang around the checkin area for about 2.5 hours. People certainly were bumped off though.

Most of my flying is eastwards at the moment (Abu Dhabi, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Maldives), so I tend to end up on a ME or FE carrier where the amount of competition at LHR (Emirates!!) keeps the flights less than 100% full, hence it's a rarity for me at the moment.

It certainly does happen! I've been asked to change flights in exchange for compensation and/or upgrades numerous times in the past few months.
