Assassin's Creed I/II

The game is geared towards use of a gamepad though. Whazz in your official Xbox 360 controller for Windows and off you go.

There wasn't even an option to use the X360 controller in AC2 when I last checked, let alone a pre-set layout. I recall AC1 could use the X360 controller, but the controls were botched or something because they weren't the same as on the 360 version itself, and no amount of customisation would make it work properly or the same.

Anyway, though, the games are good and I thoroughly recommend playing them. Can't wait for Brotherhood to come out on PC.

Worth playing on PC?

They've always appealed to me in terms of design, setting and style of play, but I always (probably wrongly) assumed they wouldn't be so hot on PC, being essentially console ports.

So, have I been unfair? Are they generally considered well made ports, or are they better played on console? Any glaring problems that should have been fixed with patching, but haven't?

Thanks for any feedback :)
AC1 is amazing on PC you can pick it up for a fiver in Morrisons ;) Good 50-75 hours gameplay time if you collect all the flags!! If you have an ATI card it supports DX10.1 as long as you do not patch it (there is a rendering error which makes certain textures transparent which should not be).

Gfx on PC are pretty good & it will run very well on any PC from the last 2-3 years easily unlike the console version the PC runs smoothly with no horrific screen tearing & it even gets 4 extra mission types so its an enhanced version of the console game. But like so many recent games the gameplay is similar as in do this do that then repeat a lot (no better or worse than any other game though) but I personally loved it as the cities are absolutely massive to explore the amount of detail in them considering their size & how its all a single load for each city is very strong technically & it has quite an amazing atmosphere in places :D DRM is disc based only no online activation required.

AC2 I did not like as much. The gfx are DX9 only & look pretty poor in places like PS2 level  AC2 also has the new Ubisoft DRM system which cloud saves the game for you but you need a constant internet connnection which is ok as long as Ubisoft servers are not under another DOS attack (which seems to happen at least once a month :() Biggest problem I found with AC2 is the boredom as its really an inferior clone of AC1 with much worse gfx & a longer but less interesting storyline. AC2 also needs a fan made mod to get the wireless 360 controller working easily as Ubisoft made a mistake they did not correct so wired controllers work fine but wireless do not until you copy the following into your AC2 folder.

Great post - thanks :)

I passed on AC2 due to the DRM, which is a shame because I liked the first one despite its faults. Still if Ubisoft don't want my money, that's their problem. Plenty more games to play that don't use such an obnoxious system.

The main reason why not many people played AC1 was because of the awful bugs. They put in some random code, so they claim (but it was later found out that it was indeed a bug), that stopped pirates from getting any further.

The fact that they released a patch for it for the retail version (which coincidentally also fixed the pirated versions problems) suggests that the game was bugged to hell on release.

It's an okay game but there's only so many times I can go to a town, climb a tower, and then kill a few people which is pretty much 99% of the game.

AC2 is fantastic, I got a download code free with my CPU from Overclocker's and I was amazed how much fun the game is. The PC version is very nice to look at, crank the res and AA up and you are in for a treat.

It a huge game with 3 massive cities to explore with a wide variety of missions. But it now!

I could've lived with the repetitive gameplay of the first game if it were not for the yawn plot and the main character being a total douche. I keep meaning to try the second game but not got round to it yet so cant comment.

Your missing out on a really good game for no good reason unless you still have dial up internet' It causes zero problems for me as it auto logs in and loads the game straight away just like any other game.

It's the principle for me, not how it works in practice. I don't buy games with limited activations either. I don't mind a CD key or account lock, but I will not buy single player games that require a constant internet connection, or which limit the number of times you can install them. Essentially Steam is the best compromise I've found. I prefer DRM free though, like GOG.

Loved AC1 on PC. Great story, a little bit repetitive gameplay, but well worth it. I avoided AC2 on PC also due to DRM.

Got it on PS3 2nd-hand a couple of months back and I'm hooked! The first couple of hours are ponderous, but if you perceiver you'll find the gameplay is a huge improvement when the world opens up. Brotherhood is at the top of my chrimbo wishlist!
