Astra 2.2 16v? (and other car suggestions)

I've been looking for cars (no more than £5500), and I've spotted some 2.2 16v Astras for sub £5000, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them? Seem quite an interesting proposition from where I'm sitting.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a car that is roomier than a Punto (not hard), for my price range, that will be comfortable over long distances, and not have starship mileage? Need a bigger/better car as although my pokey punto is ok, it is a bit tiring over long distance.

Don't bother with the Astra, friend had the 2.2 Bertone Coupe and i didn't rate it at all, for a 2.2 it wasn't that fast..

The Astra 2.2 /2.0T is on my list of possible next cars, coming from a 1.8SRi Astra.

I find them a great alternative to the focus, imo they look much better and the interior is much less offensive. With the 2.2SRi you will get most creature comforts such as heated seats/climate/cruise etc. etc. Although cruise will be the rarest of the bunch on pre 02 models.

The 2.2 isn't that much faster than the 2.0, i think only a 0.3s difference so don't rule out the more common 2.0SRi to find a minter.

Might be worth considering the coupe also, you will get a 2.2/2.0T in these with higher mileage but most will come with leather aswell.

It might be worth realising that your in clio 172 money ( i THINK??) and also the 1.8T cupra?? Not 100% sure on this but give those a look for sure!

I know I'm always saying the same thing, but you'd get a low mileage reasonably new MG ZS 180 for £5k.

Whilst Mark 3 Cupra's should be around the 4.5-5k mark, i've been looking for the same model and they are all extremely over priced.

Theres very few low mileage examples available for less than 6k

£5k will get you a nice late GTi6 with less than average mileage

I don't particularly want an out-and-out hot hatch, as the insurance will be astronomical (almost 21, 0 ncb, although job and location help). Keep the suggestions coming though.

Aren't there 2 versions of the Vauxhall 2.2?

A gash NA version with ~ 150 horses, and a turbocharged version with ~200?

2.2 Na and 2.0 Turbo the 2.2 was never a turbo but i hear the turbo will fit with a new manifold.

the 2.2 isn't that greater engine as standered, but i think it is quite easy to squeeze more horses out of it,
i can pull away from one in my vvc coupe, but that was the vectra version, i guess the astra coupe is similar
