Asus 9800GX2 Vista issue...

Hi all,

I've been having an issue with my newly purchased system. Part of all the new bits I bought was an Asus P5K Premium motherboard, and an Asus EN9800GX2 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-156-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1009) graphics card.

I've had all the hardware installed, installed Vista Ultimate, but for some reason the Graphics drivers simply won't install.

I have tried everything I can think of, I've tried beta drivers, old drivers, latest WHQL drivers, drivers from the CD, drivers from the Asus website, drivers from the Nvidia website and even allowed Windows Update to auto-install them - NOTHING!!!

I've re-formatted and re-installed in-between some attempts at getting the thing to work - nothing!

I keep getting the error:

Installation Status: Failed
Code 80070103

It says something about the possibility of an older driver is already installed or something, but its not, this is a fresh installation of Vista! I'm wondering if the card is simply broken?

All chipset drivers are up-to-date, everything else seems to be installed and working correctly....

I'm confused! (Doesn’t take much though!)

Try driver cleaner. Simple and easy to use and will clean any old drivers. If that doesn't work, give a fresh windows install a go. From there, I'd consider phoning Asus tech. support.

Can you manually install the driver? Right click on the graphics in device manager and click update driver, then manually specifiy the location and chose the "have disk" options and select which card you have from the list? - I dont rememeber the exact step by step as I havent done it in ages.

I had to do it with a AGP 7900GS when they first came out as none of the latest drivers would install.

Thanks so far guys,

Yes, I've tried the manual install route, as far as the 'installation' is concerned it does install, it just shows up under Device Manager as not working. The standard installation setup from Nvidia also seems to work fine, then the reboot comes and still no joy! I'm getting cross now!

I'm running the XP installation now just to see if its a Vista thing or not. I guess if it doesn't work with XP then the card could be broken....

Unfortunately yes, that was the first thing I checked after embarrassingly thinking it may have been the cause, so I checked, double checked and then triple checked - and then re-downloaded the 32bit just to make sure. (I also checked that I installed the 32bit version of Vista - which was the case)

It is a peculiar issue!

Yes, I downloaded it from Nvidia's website and then tried the one (which is the same as far as I'm aware) from Asus's website.

I have also re-installed the OS in-between some of these attempts (with a re-format) so there shouldn't be any remnants of old driver there either.
