Hi there, I have gotten this motherboard around like half a year ago and I have currently have this problem when the fan at the chipset above the heatsink making a lot of noise. I have no idea what's causing it but it seems to be hindered by something which makes the fan unable to rotate smoothly. Currently, it's making so much noise that i removed the power supply to the fan. My question is:

Do you know what's causing the fan to act in this manner?

Is there a way to get it back to rotating smoothly.

Is it ok if I leave fan not running for the time being?

Your reply will be most helpful and thank you in advance.

Do you mean the CPU fan? As it sounds like your talking about the Northbridge fan a common fail on A8N sli Deluxe boards? However the premium has passive cooling on this chipset/

Thanks for the reply. I'm not exactly sure of some terms that you used, but it's not the main processor with the hugh heatsink. It's the smaller one, and if I'm not wrong it's the motherboard chipset. It has the 'Asus' sign on the fan on it. So, does this mean that it's fine if I were to leave the fan disabled?

Ok it sounds to me like its the asus a8n deluxe you have the small fan with a black Asus sticker on? That is the Northbridge fan. It must be cooled you will fry your motherboard if you dont cool it.
The fan gets noisy and alters its speed when it is going to fail. Mine did that. Telephone Asus and they will send you a new fan. But you need to fit it yourself and although I did not remove the motherboard when I replaced on. The second time i tried that I broke the board. So get someone else to replace it if you dont want to.

If you dont want to remove the board then you can snip the ends of the two white plastic pins holding the fan to the board. Then the new pins on the new fan will slot into the now free holes.

i have exactly the same problem......the chipset fan has gone haywire and is making a hell of a noise sometimes and is dead silent other times.
When you say telephone asus....what do you need to do ?
I did go on the website and request support but they wanted the serial number off the board etc etc and I couldn't be bothered with taking the board out

I did it that way the first time and was lucky but there are some electrical componants close by and they are easily bent. I would never try it again that way. BUT if you are going to try at your own risk then make sure you have very sharp clippers pref with a pointed nose (nail clippers are good) You then need to loosen the mobo on the base and shake the pins out that have dropped. The pins have metal springs on them so all the metal needs to be removed or risk a short.

if you dont want another fan from asus because they are noisy you could always buy a zalman northbrigde cooler which is silent and avaiable from OCUK
