Hi,

im looking into getting an a/v r onkyo 606 or 607 so will want to connect my d2x to it to then output on to 5.1.

i would like the d2x to do all the pc sound work as thats why i got it

i have the understanding that if i want the d2x to do the work i have to use analog outs from d2x to the analog ins on the a/v.

and using optical out on d2x will only pass through the data and the a/v will process it, or is this a setting that you can either tell the d2x to pass processed sound data or unprocessed sound data?

Hope you understand my question.

also what would process 5.1 pc sound (games, films, etc) better, d2x or an onkyo 606, i guess this question may make the above void.

Cheers

I don't think there are analog inputs on Onkyo 607 so you would have to use either optical or coaxial.

I think if you set Xonar D2X audio centre output to 6 channels (film) and 8 channels (game) and analog out to whatever speakers you have, Onkyo will set it automatically for separate output.

I would say it's better just use one, either sound card or AV receiver as i think if you use both the sound will processed twice, not sure tho.

I use D2X just for my PC with HD555 and for film, PS3, TV i have separate home cinema and sounds brilliant (Marantz)

The Onkyo 606 has the 7.1 inputs (under "DVD in" on the back) so you could connect up your card via analog, which would allow your card to do any processing. If you choose you could also connect via digital at the same time, this signal will be processed by the Onkyo. You could use the same input (DVD) for both and switch the input to change which signal you want to use, otherwise you could use the CBL/SAT for the digital signal and switch between DVD (analog) and CBL/SAT (digital).
Have a look at this and the above may make more sense;):-

My understanding is the 7.1 analog inputs were a feature included primarily for DVD-A. Due to Blu-ray and it's associated HD audio which is output over HDMI, it was probably deemed more useful and a bigger selling point if it had an extra HDMI input. Another thing to consider is that with the 607 supporting PLIIz, it would probably have had a set of 9.1 inputs, although I aren't aware of anything that has a set of 9.1 outputs.

It would seem that as far as Onkyo (and probably most similiar audio equipment manufacturers) are concerned, most people don't buy a receiver to plug a PC into (hence, no inputs labelled for a PC).
