I'm looking to purchase one of these cards: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-260-AS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1812

I currently run with a AMD 955 Black edition at 3.61ghz, 8gb's of Xms3 1600mhz and a 6950 1gb playing at 1680x1050 Resolution. With this upgrade I think i'm going to increase my Ram to 16GB and wondering what sort of benefits I will get from this upgrade and is it worth it or not.

And what Ram should I get taking into consideration they have to be 4gb Cards and not exceeding 1666 Mhz.

At the moment upgrading to 16GB of ram isn't really worth it unless you Encode video's or similar applications that use lots of memory.

Gaming wise 16GB at the moment simply isn't needed, 8GB is perfectly ample.

what psu do you have? why did you not spend the little extra and get the 2gb version of the 6950? Current card should be enough at current res, if you want more power just get a second 6950. or better still just wait a bit for the graphics cards out in the not too distant future.

My 580 runs any games I have tried so far with everything maxed out without any sign of slowdown or stuttering, including Metro 2033 and Crysis 2 with all the graphical extras.
The card is just on its basic settings, and my monitor is 1920 x 1080

I don't think i'll get the same results as you "Phil-k" As I only have a AMD 955 Black edition at 3.61ghz. And i'm going for matrix versions as it's only 20 pounds more and 15 percent better than a stock 580.

Phil-k also with the 580 how do I connect it to my Rig if i only have 2 6 pin connectors if it requires 8 pin connectors.

The graphics card comes with adapters to convert two 6 pin cables into an 8 pin cable which gives an idea of how much power it needs.

The way the card is supplied by Asus it needs either two 8 pin connectors or four 6 pin connectors to use with adapters.

You can get adapters to convert a 6 pin to an 8 pin here but I wouldn't recommend using 2 of them on the same card. Using 1 if you have a proper 8 pin connector as well might be OK but I would say using 2 is pushing it.

Using adapters for both 8 pin connections is just asking for trouble.

Your system and power supply would run much more comfortably with something like a 2GB HD 6950.

Anyway, whatever you decide to do the card is only on special offer until the new weekly offers come out. This could be any time soon as they run Wednesday to Wednesday and usually change around mid morning.

Edit:

I missed the bit that you already have a 1GB HD 6950.

There's not really anything worth upgrading to from there.

Your PSU may just be enough for another 1GB HD 6950 in Crossfire if your motherboard supports it using 1 proper 6 pin connector on each card but you'd need 4 molex adapters to provide the other two 6 pin connectors.

As you're only gaming at 1680x1050 there isn't much point in upgrading either the card you have or to Crossfire.

I would wait until you perhaps want to get a higher resolution monitor and see what the situation is then.

Regarding the RAM 8GB is plenty for a gaming system.

£420 now.
might be better to get a 2nd 6950, would be quicker than a 580. would prob need a new psu tho, still should be cheaper than the asus 580 you linked to(put the money saved towards the monitor or upgrade to sandy bridge ;) ).

And I think the 580 is the way to go my Case isn't big enough for 2 6950's.

Gaming at 1680x1050 the card you have now should serve you well for a while yet.

I suggest you wait until you perhaps move to gaming at a 1920x1080 or higher resolution.

At the end of the day we've given you a lot of sensible advice but it's your money.

The GTX 580 you were looking at is back up in price to £419.99 now.

I think I will go for one GTX 580 as i'm buying a 120Hz Monitor for 1920X1080 Resolution. Will the 580 card come with the 6 pin to 8 connectors Or will I have to buy two of these? and Is 650W enough to power one of the 580 matrixs? :D
