ASUS Maximus Gene V. The right choice for me?

We can iron out any problems you get as you go along.

Try tuning PLL also several of my chips, not this 3570K like PLL around 1.5 and with this you can bring down Vcore whilst still remaining stable.

This particular chip has an amazing memory controller on it DDR3 3165mhz is possible.

I don't get my board until tomorrow but there's plenty of useful information here already to help me get it initially configured for an attempt at 4.6.

How far do you think I would be able to push my 2x4gb RipjawsX 1600MHz 1.5v? I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to overclocking memory so any information on ram timings and voltage etc would be a huge help.

Well I got my board today but it appears I'm out of luck. Can't get it to boot. I've double checked all connections, reseated cpu and cooler and made sure the board isn't shorting against the case.

The "go" led lights up as do the red line. After that the "start" and "reset" buttons light up on the motherboard but the fans don't spin up nor the hdd's.

I've posted in tech support but if you guys have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

@Mutt, have you got both motherboard power connectors connected? What code does the motherboard show in the bottom right?

Quickly tried the settings from your screenshots. Minus the dram voltages, mhz and timings and it doesn't work for me.
I get to the windows logo and then the computer restarts.

My current ram settings are 2000MHz (9-10-10-28 1N) @ 1.45v which previously worked fine, I tried upping this to 1.5v with no joy with the above settings.

Not had time to play around and work out what the problem is, any initial ideas? Everything else I literally copied line for line.

For reference with my cpu at 4.2ghz using the inbuilt asus, windwos overclock, I run between 50-55c in prime. That's without my cpu fans set up properly as there aren't running at the same speeds. Thought the cpu fans were meant to run at the same speeds with the two fan headers...?

Yes, definitely got the 24-pin and the 8-pin properly connected. No error codes are displayed at all. I've rebuilt the system 3 times now just in case I'd not been thorough enough the first time but the end result is the same.

The Gene V wouldn't need more power than my previous board (ASRock Z68 Ext4 Gen3) would it? I'm using an Antec 550w psu and only running a single GTX 570 so I wouldn't think power would be a problem.

Take everything out but the essentials and see if it works.
I.e. just use one stick of ram and no gpu, you can even disconnect the hd and it should go straight to bios.

If it doesn't come up with any errors codes then it isn't sounding good. Maybe test the psu with your old mobo just to check that the psu is still ok.

Thanks for helping out Deaths Calling. Appreciated.

I've already tried just one stick of ram, no gpu and with 0, 1 and 2 hdd's attached and the result is always the same. I also removed the battery for 15 mins (I knew that wouldn't work) but still no joy.

Sorry guys been to cimema !!! Will try help now.

@ Mutt do you get a post code when you try start the board??? what does it stop on???

@ Death who runs 1.45v come on man clock the RAM 1.65v its Samsung IC its fine. Also instead of Mode 1 set auto if you wish.

@ 8 Pack - I've yet to see a code. The red led next to the "go" button flashes for a few seconds and the red line displays down the left side of the board and after that the START and RESET buttons become lit. Then the system turns off. Flicking the switch on the back of the PSU starts that cycle again.

Edit: I wish I did get a Q code because then I could refer to the manual and get the problem sorted. From the off it's never given a code.

I seem to be having some success now thank god. Before installing the board for the first time I attached the mini pcie card (top left corner) and there it's remained until now. As soon as I removed it I was able to boot to the bios.

Hopefully it's sorted. Thanks for the help chaps.

Good news Mutt! Do you think maybe it was shorting somewhere? That part doesn't seem much good for anything other than a wifi adapter as it's sata 2....

8 Pack, I'm taking baby steps as it's been a long long time since I last did any ocing (about 10 years)
So I tried those settings with ram set to auto timings but still on 2000mhz. I upped its voltage like you said and it still can't get past the Windows logo. I did get a flash of blue screen this time but I wasn't able to read it in time.

Two options which are different for me: AI Overclock I set to Manual, as I don't have a XMP profile with Samsung Green. I also have a option for SPI booster, which you don't have. I left this to disabled.

The basis of my Profile is the standard optimised one and I apply all the settings you've mentioned over that. I'm not sure if there are any other settings affecting this.

Also, I just discovered that you can save profiles..... handy!

Again, thanks!

Yeah at a guess that card was causing a short somewhere. Even if it was defective you would see a q code or the other thing is by pulling it out you have jolted the board which was being warped and now got good contact. Unlickely but possible. I have seen a user with bent socket pins / warped board experience no codes before.

Let us know how you go now.

deaths remove your CPU overclock when testing your RAM initially then combine both later. You need to be sure how one is effecting the other.

At 2000mhz if your still getting BSOD try LB 14 and work down.

I nearly get into Windows with all the DRAM settings left on auto, whilst using your overclocked settings.
i.e. timings, frequency and dram voltage on auto but then I get the same blue screen and Machine Check Exception.

So the issue must be more related with some of the other settings, i.e. cpu and voltages etc. I don't really know why but I would guess that something isn't getting enough power.

Everything else is exactly the same as you have mentioned. Minus above mentioned ram settings and whatever other things in the CPU Power Management and Advanced tab, which you haven't screenshoted.

Should I be loading some kind of profile as the basis of my overclock before applying the settings you have mentioned? Tomorrow I will try lowering the steps to 42 and see if it works with your settings and ram on default and then work from there.

Also is there a setting to give me more time to press Del? I hold it down before pressing power, just after pressing power, tapping it constantly...... I get into the bios about 1 in 10 times, it's so frigging frustrating!! I've taken to just pulling my HD's powercable as a sure way of getting into the bios. I guess I just need to increase the post time delay.

Yeah increase it to nine second delay or ten.

Is the Blue Screen code 101, 124 , 050, 7E, then or something similar then I will know imediately what to do.

What we could do with doing is like a live clocking session via MSN or similar I have done this for a couple of users as then I can just talk em through what to do as we go and it takes a lot less time.

I can do this if you wish but not till Sunday evening.

Thanks that would be great. Sunday is actually good for me as i'm about this weekend for once.... Very kind of you. I can use my laptop at the same time which will speed things up more. How would it be best to arrange it for you?

It can be tricky to get the blue screen as generally it just reboots.
