ASUS Maximus Gene V. The right choice for me?

You can disable reboot on error so it shows the BSOD for you.

We will discuss this Sunday evening. Not sure exact time. Will let you know.

Great ok,
I'll check the forum periodically or you can email me and it'll come up on my phone. thomasproberts 'at' gmail 'dot' com

We can arrange via the email, i.e. contact etc.

Thanks

Thanks for the help this evening 8 Pack.
Currently running memtest on a 2400mhz cas 10 profile for my Samsung Green 2 x 4gb. It's flying!

Got a 2200mhz profile saved as a stable backup as well. Will try and tighten up over the next few days with what you've said.

The reason I ask is I had an i5-2500k which needed a big voltage increase to hit 4.5/4.6 and even then the system wasn't particularly stable. I've since replaced the 2500k with a 3570k which also requires a fair few volts to hit 4.5/4.6 and is equally as unstable.

Do you think I've just had 2 mediocre chips or could the motherboard be the limiting factor? The mobo is an ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3. Or might the ram (8gb G-Skill Ripjaws X 1600) also be a factor on the 4.4 limit?

I'm buying the Gene V tonight anyway because it looks so damn good and because of 8Packs enthusiasm for it. :D

I've just bought one of these and it looks awesome , and the specs are really good too

@Deaths Calling - Has overclocking the ram given you a decent speed increase? Tbh I thought ram overclocking was a thing of the past. You don't see people doing it as much as they used to.

What were you able to get out of the cpu in the end? Were you able to push it much past 4.2?

@8 Pack - Is it ok for me to add you to my MSN? I'm ready to oc my cpu and ram and could really use your know-how. Just let me know when is convenient for you.

@FRAGMAYO - It's a tasty looking board alright. It's just a shame most of it's hidden behind my NH-D14.

Cheers mate. I've added you now.

I've been tinkering with the ram (G.Skill RipjawsX 2x4gb 1600mhz 9-9-9-24-2T) without a clue what I'm doing. I dived straight in with upping the volts to 1.65, upped it 1800mhz, changed the timings to 11-11-11-28-T2 Mode1. It's probably the totally wrong thing to do but it passed a few minutes. :D

@Mutt, not really noticed that much difference at the moment but that'l be because I've gone back to using stock CPU clocks till the ram is finished with. Memcheck definitely runs a lot faster though. I've also been fairly busy so have barely used my PC.

Memory clocks are stable and fairly good now, so should be starting CPU soon. With 8 Pack's help ofcourse :p I feel like I actually learnt a bit from him going through the ram stuff with me. I know the basics to look out for now.

I'll post some screenshots of timings etc this evening... hopefully.
