Recently I was given a used motherboard for free to use with my 4790k. When it turned up it had 3 bent pins in the bottom right hand corner of the socket. Using a magnifying glass and a thin blade I attempted to straighten them up as much as I could.

I set it all up yesterday, and couldn't get it to do anything. The fans wouldn't spin up. the start button would flash on and off. I tried taking out a stick of ram, and also tried clearing the cmos. I'm wondering if bent pins could make the board behave in this way, and if the board is possibly dead? or could it be that I didn't straighten the pins enough?

I know the PSU is fine, because I went back to my Gigabyte Gaming 3 motherboard after, and it's running fine.

Initially I wanted to use a new motherboard, as my 4790k was running far to hot in the Gigabyte Gaming 3 motherboard, and I also wanted a higher power phase board. Since I've upgraded to a H115i AIO the temps are now much lower, and the motherboard somehow now gives the board less power than it did by default earlier.

Should I get rid of the board or try again another time?

Also is it actually possible to purchase Z97 motherboards new still? I know they're out of production, but surely online stores would still have unsold stock?

Yes.

Z97 are rare but I bet new ones are out there but you will be paying well over the odds, even second hand

As Midlife Crisis has said, they are not cheap. But you can find them on the Rainforest website. One of the Hero VIII boards was available in either a brand new condition or refurbished. Another option, if you are lucky, in my area they sell lots of computer gear on the facebook marketplace. I'm sure you may find something relatively cheap there.

I've had another look at the board, and I've discovered the problem was one of the pins is snapped in half. In this case do you just chuck the board in the recycling bin, or is there anyone on this forum that specialises in socket repair?
