ASUS P5B Kit “What a Joke”

C

@ Concorde

Mine is ok in cpuz 1.39 when I overclock but at default settings I get the same readings as xrayhead...but at default settings in version 1.38 its ok...the problem is in cpuz 1.39 when the board is set on default settings...(with EIST disabled) try it m8 and you will see for yourself.

I

in my case both versions of cpu-z work the same way

you have to disable these options on bios( tought I´m with 910 bios still)

Again Guy’s thanks for all your help with this!

I’ve now managed to get a decent setup achieved and will post a screen latter when I get home.

Regards

Xrayhead

Hi there, I'm also on 0804 bios (iirc) and still getting the double reboot/strap change problem when turning on my rig. The symptoms are turning it ON, getting power for a second or so, then the motherboard turns OFF, and then a few seconds later it comes back on.

I always though this behaviour was by design due to the Northbridge changing the strap/latency settings, can anyone confirm the latest P5b bios resolves this issue ? (as the constant power switching worries me!)

Si.

Hmm, really useful thread guys, this is my first Asus C2D board and the options are a bit overwhelming at first. I couldn't work out why CPU-Z was showing 1800MHz here either, now I know :)

Hi, mines on the latest BIOS and it still does this, though I'm convinced it only does it after I have been changing things in the BIOS or fiddling with the h/w. I'm fairly sure it has never done it on 'normal' boots/usage.

exactly, the Board only does the "false" start when something is changed in bios( fsb, cpu multiplier, etc)

normal stutdown / power -on does not do that :)

Yeah neither does my board? If I press the power button it boots up as normal, it only does a 'double' start if I change voltage or other hardware settings in the BIOS and then save and exit. The only other board where I have seen a similar thing was the ABIT NF7-S.

If a user is getting a double restart under normal conditions I suspect there is something wrong 'somewhere'?

I'm still on the original BIOS that came with my board (0804 I think?).

Mine does it every time I power on.

I am running at a 400MHz FSB, my understanding was the reasons to be due to the northbridge changing into a different strap (mode) at anything 400+ on the FSB.

This does not happen if I run at stock (266MHz) FSB.

I guess I will just live with it as I have been doing. I'm not going to upgrade BIOS when I have everything running well at the moment.

Still thanks for the input guys ;)

So is this a problem or is everything ok? If its a problem (enough to post on a forum about) then why not solve it? Not saying it could be as 'easy' as a BIOS update but clearly you have something not quite right there?

Is the PSU ok, have you configured something wrong in the BIOS and the board is having to correct it upon reboot?

I again

I recomend everybody to update bios to 910,if you do not have done it yet
it´s a very stable bios a it has corrected some " bugs"

First i download the bios from Asus site to desktop, then i use the Asus update tool in Windows, never had a single problem with that :)

( I heard the newer bios 1004 does not suport " roll-back") - so I stick with 910, it´s very good,no problems at all

and my Board only does the "false" start after I change some configurations on bios, other than that ,it boots completely normal as any other board

also my chipset is ReV C1 - I think some boards have the REV C2 - but do not now if this has anything to do with that problem( well in my case is not a problem really)

you could see what bios you have in your board in cpu-z

This is an amazing thread - it's gone from "What a joke" to what a great board. Brilliant example of why these forums are the most useful support mechanism around.
