Asus P5W dh - no hdd boot

built my new rig yesterday:

asus p5w dh deluxe (bios701)
6400 cpu duo
2 gig cosair ddr2 6400
tagan 500w
connect3d x1900 xt 512mb

bios recognises my primary master as my maxtor ide 80gig
s.m.a.r.t. status is good

i get as far as win installation folders then after the automatic reboot the hdd dont boot. i get a bios beep which i think means master device not found and then just a blinking cursor, then the primary slave cd drive boots and i go back to xp setup.

I have the hdd jumpers in right place
i've tried reseating cables; different cable; different ide hdd; clearing cmos; disabling jbmicron raid controller; different boot priority.

i cant get it to work and i dont have a sata hdd to try.

dunno what else to do. Any help would be great.

What mode is the SATA set on? There is a floppy F6 driver disk needed for AHCI mode in XP install. If you have no SATA there is a fall back setting, can't remember what its called.

raid mode(jumpers) is: raid1 safemode

i need to install something to get an ide ata hdd to work?
