Just got my laptop back from Asus to replace a dying fan.

They've wiped both the primary and secondary HDDs and left a test account on the system?

Is this normal practice? What an utter ball ache to restore my entire system for a fan change.

That's a surprise with Asus, they have such a good reputation at the moment, both with the high quality of their merchandise and after sales service.

I may be being sarcastic here.

I knew when they farmed it out to a third party it was going to suck.

The whole thing seems sloppy:

- they could just boot from an external drive for testing
- they couldn't be bothered to just refresh windows back to new, instead just left the test account on
- wiping the secondary SSD seems ridiculous
- cosmetic damage from where they've pried the base off

I bet they've just slapped normal TIM on it too.

This just seems normal for Asus though.

theres probably small print somewhere
warning you data may be lost
but yeah they could just use a live usb
to test the repair of a fan
and as armageus said too
sometimes the fault could be hard drive or windows
so data would be lost then
or they may replace the whole thing with a newer model
if you get lucky

good news is sounds like
you may actually have backups?
even if restoring them will take a while
I've got a full backup but it's just a pain in the arse to have to do that for a fan replacement.

Back from 2nd repair:

Replaced the screen for the cosmetic damage, small win!
Minor damage to the bottom half of the laptop shell, both edges scratched exposing metal
Noisey fan rubbing against the case still the same
Bottom panel is lose

Plan B - going to ask the reseller to replace. Can't be arsed with this, lesson learned.
