At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

I wouldn’t say a 3080 for over £300 is a bargain in 2025.

It certainly wasn’t a bargain in 2020 either when it came out.
I dunno about today as it’s now 5 years old so is expected to struggle but back in 2020 it offered 90% the performance of the flagship at £650, people are now paying over £1000 and in some cases up to £1800 for for just 66% of the flagship performance.

The trouble is, if you refuse to buy, at some point you have to stop being a PC gamer. For many of us this is our main hobby.

I don't really know anyone who is happy with the situation. But I also don't really know anyone that hasn't increased their budget when they effectively had no choice.

Everything is getting more expensive. A lot of us just have to evaluate what is still important, and what isn't. The world is at an interesting juncture, and who knows how bad things can get? In more ways than just GPU shortages...

It used to be a nice little hobby I used to say I can't afford fast cars or fast women but I could afford a fast PC! Sadly thats no longer the case or rather when it gets to a couple of grand just for a new card I have other priorities for that kind of money a nice holiday or putting it towards a new car.

I would say that the trouble is people paying these crazy amounts of money is giving the suppliers no reason to worry about inflated prices.

I'm optimistically going to say that the number of people who pay stupid money for these products is finite. Once those who pay scalper prices have all bought their new cards, only the more reasonable consumers will remain.

I guess the problem then is if GPUs continue to get drip fed to stores, then the supply will never outstrip the demand from scalpees (?), another GPU generation starts and we're back to square one again.

Demand might be finite, but that finite demand could eat all cards made for the next year...

People with lots of disposable won't just buy one card. They buy multiples.

If you want to play just-released games, then you'll need a fairly-recent GPU, but there's a lot of older games that still stand up today. There's also a lot of games outside the AAA world that have great stories or replayability, without crushing your card with the graphics.

I'm currently playing D2R on the igpu of a 7700 :-p

People notice flagship price increases more so but its the low end that's been hit hardest and seen the largest price increases as a percentage.

With the Trump shenanigans I did wonder if I should upgrade my 7700xt but I'm restricted to some degree by a 650W PSU. I did consider a 5070 which would be faster but has the same VRAM, the 5060ti most likely would be a side step except for 16GB of VRAM. The smart move would be a 9070 but that's around £600. So I've come to the conclusion it might be better to stick as I am & do a total rebuild in a year or so & hope the world is a bit more stable then!

My RX9070 works fine off a 600W Corsair SF600.

This. You don't need 4k or >60hz to enjoy playing games on PC. There's only a problem when you get sucked in by the marketing and convince yourself you can't enjoy it unless you have the latest and best thing.

The rate at which £2.5k to £3k+ GPUs are continuing to sell out tells you all you need to know. There is a significant market there for £3k+ GPUs, and the manufacturers are going to meet that demand. A lot of this is simply that the PC gaming demographic is just getting older and consists of a lot of middle-aged IT professionals with plenty of disposable income.

I have a feeling a a lot of the demand for 2.5-3k cards are from people in AI field, its better than paying £6000+ for a workstation card, I could be wrong and gamers are Just crazy. But I think next round of top end GPU the cards will start at £2.5k, unless AMD can save the day but I have a feeling they will priced be similarly. Wish Intel could have succeeded with their GPU designs, the market needs more competition.
