720 or 1080 refers to the vertical number of rows of pixels. (In a 16:9 image you would have 1920 horizontal columns/pixels)crashuk said:

a lot of TVs only have downscalers that can cope with 1080i, so it is a bit different, but not actually a selling point. As any HD source that has 1080P as an output option, will also be available in 720P and 1080i so you dont actually gain much, because you could just have switched it to something you can play

im reserving judgement on this till i've seen it myself. Im going to wait till 1080P bluray starts comming along, and then judge the difference on my screensize and see if its worth, at 40" i suspect it wont. but then it may be worth having a 1080p panel to have a TV with the same native res as the input signal it accepts (1920 x 1080)
