Atheists & agnositcs: How do you view religious people?

In general - I view atheists; as short-sighted, vain and 'realistic', a mere commercial product of whatever we choose to define as modernity.

I, too, regard atheists in a similar light to religious. Their beliefs are typically arrogant, ignorant and illogical. Although they'll both vigorously defend their faith. I see them both as extremist views.

I respect their right to believe, but as for the particular beliefs themselves, I can't say I share them. And a lot of the time I would vehemently oppose.

You see atheism and theism as extremist? My housemate is a Christian and you'd never know it unless you were to ask him directly. He's entirely reasonable and respectful about other people's beliefs and doesn't mind casual jokes about his own. Would you call that extremist? My other housemate is an atheist and is similarly reserved about his beliefs.

I don't understand why extreme and bizarre beleifs are protected in law simply because it is a religion.

I'd get no protection in law if everyone thought I was a headcase for beleiving I could fly using special powers space aliens gave me, for example.

I think anyone is entitled to beleive whatever they like but as a beleif is a choice it seems odd that it features so heavily in law.

I'm agnostic and in general don't have a problem with religious people/atheists. However I have a strong dislike to those religious people and their churches which try to reduce the equalities and freedoms others enjoy - many christian and islamic people/beliefs fall into this category. e.g. the catholic and islamic churches both have a strong and continuing tradition of repressing and discriminating against women which I cannot agree with.

You would if they decided to harm/harass you for it.

Deluded and stuck in the past. How people can still believe in this is beyond me. I like to use the example of when people used to think the moon and sun were gods. They had no explanation for it so though, oh it must be some super being. The same goes for 'modern' religion in my view. Also there is a point of where you are born defines what religion you are, you will follow the same religion as your parents do and as their parents did. This is down to pure chance so how can you base your life around something so random? You could just as easily of been any other religion.

I view atheists the same way i view religious people.

Atheists aren't a unified group of people with a shared belief system, it's just any individual who rejects theism. Whether any individual atheist is militant in their stance towards religion is inconsequential as no two will hold the same beliefs about everything and those militants will probably be just as arsey with other atheists about other views they hold as a religious person.

On OP I don't particularly view religious people in any way (speaking as an atheist). People should be assessed on individual grounds and whilst I wouldn't agree with their beliefs I wouldn't instantly dislike a person just because they believed in a big man in the sky. But religious authority however I have a massive beef with and can't believe those people who genuinely do believe in w/e are happy to have manipulative extremists cash in on that.

If that were true then we would all be of the same religion as our forefathers, I would be a Christian or even some Pagan if we take that back far enough.

Religious people are not a single unified entity with a shared belief structure either, hence there are hundreds of religions, within these religions are again various beliefs and interpretations that differ from each other.

Atheists fit into the same faith based creed driven ideology as any orthodox religious one. The New Atheists worship an as yet unsupported by evidence certainty that they can or will be able to explain how and why the Universe came into existence. Some of them can and do behave as intolerantly and fervently towards any who do not share their unproven orthodoxy as any religious inquisitor.

Atheism is simply the new fashionable religion for the scientific generation.

I'm talking modern day. If you're born in certain places you're going to be the countries religion significantly more than another.

Clearly you have no idea about the proposed theories then. How did 'God' get there? From nothing?

I'm agnostic and was lightheartedly poking fun at the 'logicalness' of atheism in response to the accusation that theists are 'deluded and stuck in the past' :)

I think religion is brainwashing, nothing more, nothing less.

If someone brainwashed me, and nobody told me about it, I'd be mad.

So it's our duty to tell religious people they're brainwashed, and try talking them out of it.

I refer to myself as Anti-theist.

There are two ways i think about it.

1) Religious people are stupid.

2) Religious people are weak.

The stupid bit is classic, and so no need to go into that.

The reason religious people are weak is because they 'believe' in a god. I simply cannot understand that anyone would worship god, even if he is real?

Lets say god is real, why would you not eat pork? why would you go to church, why would you do anything god told you? Look at the worlds religious beliefs, they are quite simply retarded.

I judge all people by their behaviour, not their beliefs, hence a significant minority of both theists and atheists are bigoted, intolerant and misguided from where I sit.

Well I suppose heaven is probably a bit better than a firey pit of death.

Your bluntness in the second paragraph gave me a good chuckle :D

Just look at the short sendoff anyone who posts about aliens or 9/11 conspiracies get.

Why is the stuff the religious people say any different?
