Athlon II X4 Vs. Phenom II X4 for gaming/editing

I was playing Bad Company 2 the other day and thought the game felt 'different'. Wasn't until after I realised my CPU was defaulted to stock X4 630 specs where as I was running it as an unlocked Phenom II normally - I noticed the difference of the missing L3 cache and slightly higher clock speed.

just done a quick side by side comparison.

Gimped 460?

In other news, once you overclock you won't tell the difference in games.

Once you've bunged it at 1080P, chucked on the eye candy, and cranked up the AA, you'll more than likely be GPU limited rather than CPU in most games.

Remember in those CPU charts posted earlier the X4 635 is running 2.9GHz vs the 955's 3.2GHz and the 965's 3.4GHz, so there is a good 300-500MHz clock difference, which accounts for most of the difference in speed.

Obviously the L3 cache helps, but not to the extent that it is an absolute must for gaming.

The FPS the X4 puts out is more than enough to give smooth gameplay. Hell the X3's are more than good enough for gaming, you can pick up an X3 450 (3.2GHz) for under £60, and it'll play anything out fine.

I currently dropped from a 1090T to an X3 and honestly can't tell the difference in games.

Well then, looks like the Athlon is out the running.

So, its either the more budget friendly X2 550 or the X4 955.

I'll be getting a 790FX chipset board, so unlocking is still probable.... Hmm...
