ati 10.12 killed my system.

What operating system is being used? A lot of problems I believe comes from the sheer variation of hardware and software combinations. Too often I see discussions of issues without knowing all the variables ;)

When you install over the top, doesn't it actually say for each component that it will upgrade it from <whatever version is installed>?
Seems like that'd have to be specifically coded in there. Seems odd for ATI/AMD to do that if that's no how they intended them to work. If it can detect the old drivers, could it not warn you not to install over the top if you were about to?

Best advice I can give regarding graphics drivers is to follow the official manufacturer instructions. Therefore there is really no reason to remove drivers, installing straight over works just fine as the installer checks for previously installed drivers and updates as necessary. If you really need to remove them, use the ATI catalyst install manager, which can be accessed via "add/remove programs" in Windows.

I've being doing it like this since first using Windows 7 and haven't had a single 'bad' driver install yet.

I've always installed over but since it was a new GUI I uninstalled it and remove all traces on the C drive and used Ccleaner to clean registry after that it was fine and my odd crashing in flash video in full screen has stopped so I'm happy with them.

I love it when you read what looks like an informative post to know inside by Real experience it to be Total *******. :p
Perhaps it's just to late for me to explain myself properly but i will say that the Butler did it.

Ati 10.12 killed my system is the Best title I've seen in a while though. :p

USER ERROR USER ERROR USER ERROR :p:p:p

the over drive is buggy as when you oc, the min oc value is the actual oc value, may not matter.

In my experience (Cat 9.9/10ish -> 10.12) this happens every time you install over previous drivers, on any AMD card (tested on 4350, 4850 and 5870).

Solution is not necessarily to do a clean driver install, but rather to reset to bios default clocks and apply that before OCing again, it'll fix the sliders.

To clarify, what Jewii means (I think..) is his card's OC value was showing up as being the minimum on the slider, with the slider at the far left. In my case for example, the memory @ 1300mhz becomes the minimum value on the slider rather than the maximum that CCC allows. Moving the slider to the right without resetting bios defaults causes the clock to move higher than is normally allowed, potentially hitting up to 1700 memory and 1200 core.

Why do people perpetuate this urban myth of buggy ATI drivers? Most of us aren't remotely qualified or in possession of the technical know how to make such an assumption.

I always install straight over the top. Would rather do that than introduce third party software like Driver Sweeper. It's just introducing another potential point of failure in my opinion.

Have had my 5850 (reference card) for nearly a year now and always just download and install new drivers without removing old drivers, never have had an issue with any version including these 10.12

well, you don't need to be qualified to see software isn't acting robustly. it simply breaks, thus showing bugs. i kind of see what angle your trying to get at but most times the fault is due to the drivers exspecially when no third party software is used.

to clarify, i used a third party programmes to fix the problem.

Because idiots often aren't willing to consider that it's their user error that's caused the problem, which is the case 90% of the time. Strangely enough, nVidia driver quirks get put down to just that, quirks, and a fuss is generally not made over it, and no, I'm not calling you an idiot Jewii.

The problem is that using the third party programmes like driver cleaners can affect driver installs later on.

Some people use driver cleaners as a matter of coarse whether they need to or not & end up making a problem when a particular driver set didn't agree with being driver cleaned.

So just using a driver cleaner just once can effect that OS install indefinitely with some ATI drivers installing & some not & i have tested this myself.
