*****ATI 6850 / 6870 NOW IN STOCK AT OCUK!*****

Whats worth noting though is a £175 6870, that is very competitive if not bang on 470gtx performance which will cost you £200, is fantastic. WHats bad for Nvidia is, that £200 470gtx is making them a pretty large loss, AMD will have a healthy profit on the £175 6870, half the size, Nvidia can't stay in business if AMD has double the efficiency per mm2.

There were people saying hours ago AMD wouldn't be competitive, sure.

As things stand on OCUK the 6870 isnt competitive, you can buy a 470 for £12 cheaper and it is faster most of the time (techpowerup). If the 6870 was £175 then it is a clean sweep for ATI in the £150-£200 bracket

I assume the 470 is a reference design?

If so I would rather have the cheaper, cooler running and quieter 6870. The performance difference is not really noticable most of the time (both offer more than playable framerates) so the other advantages come into play.

Now a aftermarket decently cooled 470 on the other hand....

(Just to be clear I owned a reference 470 (flashed 465) so I am talking from experience rather than regurgitating a review I have read.

Also seen the 6850 for under £140 elsewhere (why are OCUK so expensive?!). I might get one for my wife at this price.

I think OcUK is charging a premium because they actually have the 6870 in stock, where as everywhere else seem to be pre-order...and those few places which I saw seem to have had the pre-orders filled and removed the listing.

sapphire 6870 £204.99 , is this the correct price ? . seen it else where for £176.45 , surely they have the incorrect price on these ?

Exact same price at OCUK's arch nemesis. They are doing an XFX brand card (radial cooler - might be worse - and no 2x mini display port sockets) for £177 pre-order _with no eta date_. Which is probably what you have seen.

Radial (think original Zalman cooler or MSI and Gigabyte 460s) non referance cooler internal case venting designs seem to have been ok on the 460s if you already have a big case. The lack of the display ports might not be an issue for many people too.

What I want to know is - how on earth is anyone ever going to shift their remaining 5850s and 5870s?? They will have to come down massively in price to clear wont they? In which case I might be tempted by a 2nd 5850 :)

I've seen 6870 Sapphires in stock, for £175.

So prices do seem a bit high.

Gonna be a tough decision between a 6870 and a GTX470 at that price!

I am waiting for the 5870 to come down in price for exactly the same reason.

Cannot see it happening for w hile though.

I am I missing something with the 6870. Its priced the same as a 5850, performs a smidge faster than a 5850. What is so great about this?

It does have a new AA but from the pics I have seen all it does is blur the image and make it look worst. This makes it another useless AA like Wide Tent and Narrow Tent.
Plus side is that it uses less power and has 3d. However I do think the price is too high @ £200-215. I would have expected this card to sell for around the £160-170 mark considering how close its performance is to the 5850.

Read above, its only 200-215 here, I have seen 6870 in stock (stock only lasted about an hour) this morning for 175. At 175 for the 6870 the 5850 is practically redundant, although rumour has it that the prices of the 58xx series won't drop much if at all, the stock is expected to be run down by people xfiring their current 58xx.
