ATI 6950 Unlocked to 6970 Texture fill rate?

Ok I have managed to use my modified BIOS after re flashing the 6970 bios and then flashing again to the modified 6950 Bios, now think I should increase the clock?

By the way, I wouldn't advise running the 6970 BIOS for long as it's not good for the memory on the 6950. The 6970 card has different memory timing and modules. This can damage the card so I'd suggest doing this http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=18389365&postcount=906

This will unlock the shaders only and leave you with your 6950 timings. Your voltage will go from 1.175v (6970 BIOS) down to 1.100v (6950 BIOS). This will limit you to about 880-900Mhz on the core. Raising it with RBE or MSI Afterburner to 1.175v and you should hit between 940-975Mhz core.

If you use this method, rather than using the 6970 bios, will your card perform as well as if you had flashed it with a 6970?

Good news then :). Remember that now you are back with the 6950 BIOS that your voltage has went from 1.175v to 1.100.

With 1.100 it's usually between 880-900Mhz on the core which has to be attained using MSI Afterburner. You have to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner (this is using Win7 64bit) and open MSIAfterburner.cfg with wordpad (remember to uncheck the box so it doesn't use this to open with every time).

Change EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0 to 1 and then save. Restart MSI Afterburner and now you can overclock past 840Mhz :).

For voltage play I'd rather not use MSI Afterburner as it changes Powerplay idle clocks to 475Mhz Core and 725Mhz Memory, that's from the default 250/150Mhz. (This was on Version 2 Beta 6 and now Beta 7 is out so things might have changed) So what I do is use RBE (Radeon BIOS Editor). Here is a post I done for someone explaining what to do.

If you get stuck then post back and I'll help you out.

EDIT: I just realised that this was information for a genuine 6970 user to go further than the stock 1.175v. So where I say to look for 1175, you need to look for 1100. Sorry about that.

:D

That's all I done mate, plenty of reading as I had not the first clue before I got the card other than it unlocks and how it performed in the reviews I read.

I'll be here.

Good luck.

Right well without adjusting any voltages my card wont overclock above 840/1325, As soon as i go one step above it starts artificating and wierd things happen. What would you do? I want it to be atleast like a 6970 >.<

Have you tried putting Power Control to 20%?.

Maybe it's not as good of a clocker and needs the extra voltages to hit 880Mhz and beyond. Is it HIS by any chance?. Your subvendor in GPUz comes up the same as mine. Reason I'm asking is that someone else got HIS cards and theirs clocked just like mine.

Also remember you are at stock 6950 voltage so putting the voltage at 1.175v will have you exactly as the 6970 is and should allow you to clock further.

What are your PC specs also please?.

I have a PowerColour 6950, my PC spec are:
I7 920 clocked to 4ghz
6gb DDR 3 at 9 9 9 24
Gigabyte EX58 UD5 Mobo, Hmm maybe i should just whack the voltage up to 1.175 like you said, Il try the extra power control first! Il let you know, if their is anything you think will help just let me know man! :)

Well I have increased power by 20% and taken the clocks to 880/1375 im just waiting for it to start artifacting now...Il let you know how it goes.

*There it goes starting artifacting like a good'n* BOOOOOOOOOOO!

Whats next? I guess increasing the volts to 1.175?.

Ah right, sorry I thought we had the same card. Nice rig btw :).

Yeah it looks like the next step is the voltage increase.

Maybe this isn't a good clocking card then, sorry to hear that if this turns out to be true. As long as you can hit the 880Mhz of the 6970 then at least that should be ok.

Quick question, how did your card run with the 6970 BIOS or did you only have it at 800Mhz?.

Oh and good news :D. Whilst you were testing I installed the new MSI Afterburner. Now I can overclock and retain my powerplay settings so I keep my 250/150 idle clocks wooooo. I also tested to see if the voltage play works and it did although I only tested to see if you could change but I didn't apply due to me being already at 1.175v.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18236614&highlight=Afterburner

Do what is instructed in the opening post and this is all I had to do to get Afterburner working.

So get this installed, try it out at 1.175v and let me know how you got on.

This is worrying. I thought it was a sure thing that they all did 6970 clocks?

So did I.............-.-

What's to worry about? They're running a 6970 at 6950 voltages, if they all did it at 1.1v then I'm sure ati would have set the 6970 at 1.1 :D

Didn't have to say a word :D. Thank you buttkinz lol.

ok well, I increased the voltage to 1.175 using the MSI After burner version you reccommended and upped the clocks to 880/1375 and within about 45 seconds I was artifacting :(
