As title. I'm trying to get an idea of the performance of the 7600gs (agp) card in comparison to ati cards (X800 series). Also, how does the 7600gs compare with the 6800gt?
Cheers.

7600gs is better than x800 series since it has shader model 3.0 and can play splinter cell double agent.

but in older games x800 will be quicker due to more fillrate and memory bandwidth.

if your after a new card post a budget and we can see what to advise.

I suppose up to £80 max. I'm looking at buying s/h too but I haven't heard anything back from the guy regarding a 6800gt.

I actually prefer they way the x800 series doesn't have shader model 3. There is no real need for it. For the amount of frames per second it costs you the visual enjoyment doesn't justify it. If you want shader model 3 you should get a beefier card. In saying that, the 7600GS is the better card overall and should be purchased for it's better value and performance not because it has shader model 3. Just my €.02.

LMFAO

Something that could compare to the 7600GS would be the X1600XT I think. The X1650XT would be a fair bit faster I think. But yeah, have a look around for some info on the X1600XT. :) I'm pretty sure that would be similar performance.

as said above, the X1600/1650Pro/XT are about the same performance perhaps some faster. Second hand, the x800's are still viable, unless you need SM3. Due to the newer cards, you might also be able to pick up a 7800GT, X1950Pro, X1900GT or something like that for about £80, but *famous auction site's* a changing market so prices can be hard to predict on tech like that (sometimes it sells crazy prices high, sometimes crazy low)

Try checking ebay for X1600XT buy it now, theres one on for £75 New (ie with Warranty).

The XT models of the X1600 series were actually pretty good, were just fairly hard to get hold of.

As OcUK dont sell these any more, I dont think Im breaking regs, as *famous auction site's* a mostly second hand place, please warn/edit if i have.

You might also be able to pick up a 6800GT reasonably priced second hand, and thats not a bad card :)

The ATI lineup equivalent to the 7600GS would be the X1600pro/XT/X1650pro HOWEVER the 7600GS is considerably quicker than the X1600pro and most likely quicker than the XT and X1650pro as well.

If you look around you can buy 7600GT's at just above your price range.

The X800 series were generally speaking better performers than the X16 series. I say generally as there were a few odd cards in the X8 lineup which may not be as good.

Ok, its between the Leadtek 7600gs or the Sapphire X1600pro. General concensus of opinion, which of these two cards would give the best allround performance?
Cheers.

x1600pro is pap, even the old 6600 GT whooped its ass, id look for a 7600 GT, or an x1650 XT, as they are both similar performance, anda re faster than the old 6800 Ultra, id deffo steer well clear from the x1600pro though, the 7600 GS should whoop it out of the water. :D

shader model 3.0 is the icing on the cake. :D

Had a chat with me mate, looked at alternatives, capability of running todays games etc, and I convinced him to go for the Leadtek 7600gt, not the "gs". I reckon the extra grunt, even when not overclocked, would be useful.
I'm gonna assemble his system, P4 3g (lga775), 1gb ram, and see how it performs. I'll post back later with some results.
Thanks for all the help guys.
Incidentally, what are the best drivers to uase with this card?
