ATI HD5770 VaporX unstable?

Bought this from OcUK at new year. Came a few days late due to the delivery company calling in a third party driver who "didn't turn up for work". Installed it and tried out a few games. Some ran like a dream but with some, I get vivid green spots and glitches followed by Vista restarting the device. This can happen quite often and in some cases it freezes up the comp. (which has only happened twice in the two years since I built the PC.) CHKDSK end up having to clear up a lot of mess afterwards.

Tried sending a ticket to Saphiretech but they haven't responded after three days.

Tried the previous drivers.

Downloaded the BIOS update from the Saphiretech site. Ran the batch file.

Uninstalled the drivers, used regedit to remove the two ATI filders hidden away in there and re-installed the drivers.

No success with any of these steps. What should I do? Could the card be broken and should I send it back to OcUK?

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.4GHz
Memory: 2GB DDR2
Mobo: Asus P5b Dulux
Windows Vista™ Ultimate (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2

If you could try it on someone elses pc that might also help, if you have access to one of course. If you bought it on the new year i think OcUK can RMA it for you, just make sure it is faulty first.

It's not overclocked at all is it?
If not sounds like an RMA to me???

I wouldn't RMA until I've tested it on a clean install using known drivers.

You wouldn't be the 1st to have experienced crashes and lockups on this card until a reboot. Think i even read similar on here.

Important Update

Just got of the phone to OcUK.

It turns out that they have just recieved a message from ATI reguarding this issue. ATI have just admitted that the card will only run properly on motherboards with PCI-E 2. Older motherboards using PCI-E 1 will not work properly, despite the system requirements not stating this. ATI have effectively miss-sold this product to all producers of the HD5770. The engineer from OcUK stated that allthough a new batch will be brought out soon to resolve this issue, they will not RMA the card as they will test it on Mobo's using PCI-E 2 only.

Any attempts to get a refund from ATI will be passed on to the companys that produced the cards, leaving it to them to decide wether to refund their customers.

I'm appauled that this is acceptable practice for a reputable hardware producer.

This is all getting a bit weird now, i've had a few crashes etc with mine, which seemed to sort itself out pretty much after a reinstall of windows. However the mrs' pc has got an Asus 5770 in and has been absolutely rock stable ever since she got it. Her board is an old MSI though, with PCIE 1.x, so I think even ATI don't really know for sure what's going on with their cards lol.

Oh dear! is this all 5770 or just the vaporX? I was going to get a 5770 next month

The OcUK engineer told me over the phone that it was all HD5770 cards. HD5550 are fine with it.

The reason the engineer gave for some people are not having issues is because the games they are playing are not graphics intensive enough to trigger the problem apparently.

I've to make a web appeal to an OcUK superviser given that due to the underlying problem I was miss-sold the card. (no mention of PCI-E2 in system requirements.) I'll let you know how they treat me when I get a reply.

Gutted. Is it software(drivers) problem or hardware?

don't know what box your looking at but on the front it says pci-express 2.0 if u like i'll take a photo. just because people have success in using it in a 1. slot don't mean u will have the same luck.

Of course it does. :) It's the first time it's happened to PCI-E2 cards. The engineer told me that OcUK are furious at ATI as you can expect. As this is unique and unintended no warning is on the box. If it was intended a warning would be required. At least to cards sold under UK trading standards.

ok i have a friend who is a solicitor i spoke to him about this. He said as the products box says pci express 2.0 then they are stating the product is pci express 2.0 therefore it does not have to work on pci-e 1.0 and they do not need to give any warnings as you are buying the product and the products box clearly states pci-e 2.0.

you can return this within 7 days if u wish but after this period no company is obligated in anyway to provide you with a refund/exchange unless the item is faulty. This product can not be return with the old faithful product unfit for use malarky. As the product is proven to work in pci-e 2.0 just like it states on the box.

call trading standards about it you won't get anywhere i'd say it's down to a good company if they wish to give you a refund/exchange.
