ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 - Fastest Yet! - tomshardware.com

Hello drak3, I'm sorry but which review website are you looking at that states a single core graphics card beating the ATI 3870 X2 in half of the games?

One of the most reputable review sites out there is Anandtech in my opinion. :)

He's looking at the reviews with the AA on, like in some of the tests in this one.:p

Id be looking at that to tbh, if i was buying a dual card, id want it faster than a single card with some AA on as well. :)

I hate to say it (As an avid supporter of Nvidia for many years :p) but after re-reading this review (Only looked at a few games), this card is very close to the Ultra and the GTX, and sometimes even better!
Especially in the 24" benchmarks!

Exactly,

I think im going to have to get one and an ASUS Rampage when it comes out lol.

Would be nice running one of these and an x3780 in crossfire until i can afford a second 3780x2 :D

sorry to burst your bubbles, but it seems a direct comparison between 1year old 8800GTX and this showed that this was just about able to keep up.

Please don't quote stuff from HardOCP. They're either doing something really wrong, or their cheque from nVidia is due soon.

In fact, just go read the forums, and see their Editor telling anyone who questions the benchmark to go away, or just editing their posts.

Yeah these are looking very nice cards indeed especially if they scale well with a 3870 or another 3870X2....for Tri&QuadFire... *feels wallet burning*

Mind you, the nVidia cards are still bloody nice cards though, especially the GTS, which seems to be a consistent performer among varied review sites. If nVidia ever get SLi working as well as ATi's xFire...well... bye-bye competition until the next gen :-(

sorry to burst your bubbles, but...

You have to take hardocp with a pinch of salt.

For example:-

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3209&p=3

Is not using benchmarks for bioshock and show a clear advantage for 3870x2

Then you have:-

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3209&p=5

Showing for Crysis a gain over the gtx. Yes they are using the inbuilt benchmark which hardocp would agrue against with the following

"Do game developers want to provide built in benchmarks that show their games running slow? Or would the game developers rather put a game "benchmark" in that shows their game hauling ass? Do you think that slow benchmarks equal more sales?"

However you have to wonder that if nvida gtx did perform better than 3870x2 in this game (as hardocp claim) then would an Nvidia sponsored game really want a benchmark which inflates the scores of ATI cards thus boosting their sales?

This could go on, but personally I just take hardocp with a pinch of salt.

The Geforce 8800 Ultra is suprisingly fast even compared to the GTS (it only has a memory bandwidth advantage - the GTS 512 has more texture units and same number of shaders). But in any case the benchmarks show multi-GPU rendering is far from developed at the moment. Granted, the Ultra is stupidly expensive, but then the 3870X2 doesn't beat it decisively enough across all of the benchmarks - it will need to be price competitive with the GTX to sell. After all, it isn't difficult to clock the GTX to Ultra speeds.

Wasn't this the same HardOCP that claimed the Core 2 range wasn't worth buying?

I appreciate what they're trying to do, but their results look so skewed anyway. Although I never realised that Anand bench a cutscene and an empty map!

Question is, who the hell can we trust?

Most if not all review sites are biased to one or the other i trust people who buy the cards more as they using their machines day in day out and play the games, you can soon get a idea from 2 or 3 people who got them in the forums what the cards are like.
I don't like canned benchmarks myself,i will wait until people on here test the card then i think how good or bad it is.

What we really need is a straight comparison between the top 3: the 8800GTX, Ultra and the HD3870X2. After all, they're the most expensive single-card solutions...
