Which is the faster card, X800 (GX-050-PC) or 6600 GT (GX-044-XF)
For a 2.4ghz Northwood P4, 512MB RAM. Or any AGP upto £150 max.

Bro keeps on thinking his P4 is faster than my AMD X2 4400...is it? ;)
Also stock 350W PSU, 3 HD's...think close to limits? It's the OC value one with the removable "tick" with three colours ticks. 3.33v is reporting 3.11v

Existing graphics card is a 32MB or 64MB Geforce MX 440, runs Half-Life 2 ok which is suprising.

X800s are most definately the faster cards, GTOs are even faster again, XT are faster than GTOs and thats about as fast as they go, lol. 6600GT are good cards, but they been rendered pointless by the stonking 7600GT, as for the whole P4 faster than your X2 4400, thats unlikely unless its a cedar mill running at like 4.2ghz or something

you can get your hands on XFX 6800GS for £152.69, or something like a sapphire X800GTO for £129.19

ok ta spotted these

Connect3D ATI Radeon X800 Pro "OcUK 16 Pipeline Special Edition" 256MB DDR3 VIVO TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-004-OK)

Point of View GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-002-PV)

Have you seen those for AGP for <£150? Grab them if you can!

The 6800Ultra is a lot better than the X800 Pro so go for that over the X800 Pro. It might tax the 350W PSU though, especially a value PSU as the 6800Ultra is pretty power hungry

I'd get the 6800Ultra and then find another £40 for a decent PSU which provides at least 400W+ from Enermax, Hiper, Antec, OCZ or Seasonic

Basically, on AGP,

X700Pro < X1600Pro < 6600GT = 6800LE = 6800XT < X800 < 6800 < X800GTO=X800Pro < 6800GS < 6800GT = X800XL < X800XT < X850XT < X800XT PE = 6800 Ultra < X850XT PE < 7800GS EE < 7800GS 512MB (7800GT core) < 7800GS+ (7900GT core)

I upgraded from a Geforce Mx 420 64mb to a 6600gt 128mb and the upgrade was incredible.

That being said, at current prices, those x800's put the 6600gt to shame.

It's a great card if the price is right, but the x800 was a high end card. The better memory bus (in some models, like that one your looking at) really shows the difference in modern games and at higher resoloutions.

I'd have to say my 6600gt has served me well, but i would drop it in an instant for a switch to an x800 like that. The only hitch would be the Shader Mark 3 on the 6600gt, which affects a few games, most notably oblivion, where you cant get HDR on the old x800 series. That being said the 6600gt just isn't up to HDR in oblivion to any great degree.

yeah thanks looks like new PSU time. Plus a new case since pretty naff midi tower (small + cramped) stock Intel HSF, could do with something better (52 load) More memory. New GFX. Not sure he's gonna like that, looking at few hundred quid.

So basically X800 GTO or 6800 Ultra, depending on opengl/AA/rez preference? X850XT if one is available for his budget (doubt it)

The 6800Ultra is streets ahead of the X800GTO

Even if you could find an X850XTPE for the price I'd still be tempted to look at the 6800Ultra as it has newer features like SM3. It all depends on money though and the X850 is likely to be more expensive

I'd spend £200 on a PSU, 6800Ultra and an extra 512MB of ram

ok which PSU? Doesn't need SLI. But could do with plenty of Molex's. Which Antec or Enermax? Liberty 400W good price, but has things won't use (his next build will probably need more than 400W anyway) and won't move this PSU to the new machine.

Are previous type PSU still available?

Looks like the 6800 Ultra is out, so probably OcUK GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-035-OK)

ok going to get..

OcUK GeForce 6800 GS 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-035-OK)

Enermax Liberty 400W ELT400AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CA-026-EN) - should be fine with older systems, has 4 pin square mobo, usual molex, 20+4 mobo connector (20 pin on P4PE)

Corsair 1GB DDR XMS3200C2PT Platinum CAS2 (MY-082-CS)

If you don't mind clearance stock I'd consider the 6800Ultra and the 6800GT as these are both faster than the 6800GS :)
I thought the 6800GS was a tiny bit faster and a tiny bit slower in some games than the 6800GT, as it was intended as a cheaper replacement with the same pushing power. They overclock much better than GTs too from what I remember.

The PCI-E 6800GS is faster than the AGP 6800GS so I'm not sure on that. Most 6800GTs overclock to 6800Ultra levels too

Talking about my brother. Basically he wants more performance but not willing to pay for it...

Ah, sorry

What kind of budget was he looking at now?

For a great cost effective upgrade I'd get a second hand 9800Pro for about £55. Not that far off a 6600GT really and a huge improvement over a GF4 MX
