Last week my dad got flashed by a camera on the A1 near grantham.. he was really shook up and annoyed as he knows the camera and was doing dead on 70mph.. went back and checked for roadworks signs, there were none.. got home and pondered over it and rang the police to find out what the heck was going on, apparently that type of camera (I believe its a truvelo), cannot tell the difference between MK4 Golfs and lorries, and treats all MK4 golfs as lorries lol! this official from the horses mouth, or should I say pig's mouth

Has anyone else heard about this??

Truvelo's don't flash, they're infrared with 2 strips on the road IIRC?

Very wierd how that happens

Rofl, Mk4's look nothing like lorries...... :p

Cheers for the heads up though, I drive a Mk4 and haven't experienced or heard anything like this yet. Though I reckon it would be a laugh if true. :)

well maybe it wasn't a truvelo, but that was the police's reponse lol...

Apparently the camera can't determine it, and it switches to 60mph mode (for lorries)

haha thats weird, wonder why it is? Its not "that" big at the back is it?

Does that mean it would do the same to some people carriers?

The police apparently said its "the way some cars are shaped, it messes with the camera's detection system, some golfs do get affected by it"

You obviously won't get tickets for it, just more of a relief for those golf drivers who have been flashed and keep waiting for a letter

So he drove back that way and got flashed again, and this has only just happened for the first time today and never before even though the camera has been there for a while.......?

They flash purple twice as I've seen them (motorcyclist infront of me speeding).

No he drove back to check but went though it at around 50mph... obviously.. and the police say it happens all the time and is a known issue, he was in his company car and was the first time he'd been down there in it.

Sorry but it sounds like crap to me, if it was true there would be a press release by VW or the police on it.

Will retract statement if proven to be true, but sounds too daft!

lol well whatever, but thats what the police said.. from my own telephone...

You think im making it all up for fun or something?

I've read that they are using speed cameras to crack down on speeding HGVs. One method was to just set the thresholds low on the camera so it flashes everything (with an IR flash), but it obviously runs through the recorder very quickly for only a few speedling HGVs.

The article also said that they were using a mechanism that triggered on a lower limit for HGVs on some cameras, but the article didn't say what the detection mechanism was. It's unlikely that it's image recognition, it'd require a PC and a video camera which I don't think would be allowed in the camera housing, so it'd have to go road-side. The other way would probably be a sensor in the road, but they work on magnetic induction or weight and I can't see a Golf being big enough, even if it is a Mk4.

I call balls - faulty camera. If it was a Mk4 issue, then it's a naff system and we would have heard about it by now.

My dad said the policeman on the phone says they deal with these every day.. im suprised no one else has heard of it, but then again I don't suppose it bothers anyone because no one ultimatley gets fined..
