Audi A3 - Loss of MPG

Swapped the OEM Bridgestones for Goodyear F1's on the Fabia and the mpg average is down about 5mpg.

The Eagle F1's have hopeless rolling resistance, mostly due to the soft compound I guess (Which instantly becomes rock hard at exactly 7c apparently, just like every other tyre ;)) which has quite an effect on fuel economy. I've found it when moving to and from them and they came flat last in the rolling resistance part of the latest Evo test as well,

Stick it on a Motorway under ideal conditions and it would do 65mpg when new(ish) even on a tight engine and the Bridgestone ER300's. Now with a more miles under the wheels and the F1's it does about 58mpg under similar circumstances. I do very little mileage, so I appreciate the grip more. I might wear them out by 2013 at this rate!

Don't get me started on how useless they are in the snow. Reminds me - I need to look into snow chains before winter hits...

Snow chains in Britain? An ecohatch on very low miles...what's wrong with you man

Have you not seen the bloody snowfall in winter? I had two inches worth and I was stuck in the house for a week and had to live off Frey Bentos steak and kidney pies. Oh if only I had snowchains :(

I wouldn't call it an ecohatch. Perhaps if it was a 1.4TDi on pram tyres, but not the vRS.

Snowchains - car got beached on the parents driveway for a week last winter. Snowchains would have got it out. So would a land rover or maybe winter tyres, however snow chains are cheaper.

Mileage - ordered car when doing 25k-30k a year, then changed job. Now I live 5 minutes walk from work so commute on foot. Ironically I use the car for work purposes which is the bulk of my couple of thousand miles a year.

Not on mine. I got ECU fault code that showed up with VAG-COM but no light.

I got the light and just ignored it for 6 months. Dealer replaced the sensor for free at the last service, two years outside warranty. Only thing that's gone wrong so far.

The A3 2.0 TDI 140 would reach 58mpg with ease on a motorway, town driving you would be lucky to go above 40!

Reasons for loss are so varied such as weather change, driver habbits, passenger/luggage load, plus others my mind cant think of.

If you're that worried (I now get 14.1 mpg and miss the 40mpg :() hook it up to a VAGCOM or if its under warranty as the dealer to give it a proper look.

*edit*
Also check if you used different fuel or even a different garage, possible ecu fault, or you may just be seeing a different mpg indication on the DIS but the actual mileage achieved may be the same!

Tyre change, cold weather... and did actually go to a completed different garage for this fillup. Sainsburies! I will have to re-fill back at my usual to see if it changes.

I can confirm a similar loss of MPG.
Same car - A3 140 TDi FWD. Changed my 2 fronts to Goodyear Eagle GSD3s and lost about 10mpg according to the D.I.S.
The car happily averaged about 50-55mpg until the eagles went on. Then dropped to the low 40s. No other changes to the car. Pressures checked etc.
The tyres only lasted ~7000 miles and once they were changed I got back the 50+mpg. Odd.

Can only assume more grip/friction = pooper mpg.

Interesting stuff. Got 4 of these on my car, I have a pair of Falken 452's to put on the front before the MOT next month.

Are there any kind of figures that can go with these tests? Surely we can only be taking 1 or 2 MPG in real terms depending on what sort of driving you do?

Thats a shame - you are going to notice a degredation in performance from from the F1's. Any reason why you are doing so?

You'll probably gain 1-2mpg I would imagine.

Went to the 'ring 12 months ago and put 4 GSD3's on, really beacause of the awesome wet performance I was told about, as October in that area can be quite unpredictable I didnt fancy ending up painting the barriers.

I dont plan on taking this car back on a track again so trying to keep costs down a little as I expect to sell it in the new year. Plus its tax, service and MOT time too...

Finally resolved my issue. Not exactly sure what caused it, but a full service was due so I changed most things.

This included
- Oil Change
- Oil Filter
- Fuel Filter
- Air Filter
- Pollen Filter
- Rear tyres were down 5psi (forgot to check the rears before), so topped that up.

So today, did a nice benchmark on the way home from work and got my 69MPG average which is back to normal! \o/

I filled up at Asda this week, could have also helped over Sainsburies.. No visible smoke from any of them to be honest.

This benchmark drive I do every now and again, I'm at 55MPH for just over 40 miles. (cruise control). :)
