Audi TT

Well if I was careful, I'd get just over 40mpg from the 1.8T in a Golf (so admittedly a different map). I hear the 3.2 gets more like low 30s.

I think the point for me is that the 1.8 has such a flat torque curve (which some love and some hate) so it often feel quicker than the V6 without having to stir the gears so much. Yes, when it comes down to it, the V6 is the faster car, but in the 'real world' I would suggest the 1.8 is better. horse for course though!!

What?

I had a 1.8T golf (remapped) followed by a 3.2 DSG TT and you have to stir the gears a *lot* more in the 1.8T. The 3.2 pulls from any gear without any effort at all. There's no way in hell that the 1.8 is better in any way other than economy (and even that wasn't much better, maybe a couple of mpg)

If the OP is going to buy a TT, definitely get the V6 without a doubt. The DSG is great fun......for a few weeks then it becomes a bit boring and you wish you had a gearstick again. It becomes too much like playing a Playstation game so hold out for a 3.2 manual instead if I were you.

When you get your V6, do the exhaust flap mod (takes 2 mins) and also the Wakbox mod (take 15 mins) and you'll get to hear all of that lovely V6 growl everytime you put your foot down.

Off topic, LSPIII did you get your car mapped?

Nope, I've had to stop at the brakes for the time being, cash flow has stalled a bit. I may even have to rethink the whole car situation in Jan time as well, so for now, I'm going to make do. It's not like 210 isn't enough :p

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I had somewhat discounted the S2000 as the girlfriend will be driving it on a daily basis in all weather conditions, rear wheel drive, no traction control and ice would not be a good combo for her! On the other hand the TT has 4WD and ESP. Is this a fair assessment?

We both test drove the new 2.0L MX-5, and although it handled extremely well, it just isn't the car for us, it doesn't have the straight-line power I crave and the girlfriend felt insecure driving it compared to the TT.

Is your girlfriend going to be doing 9k revs around corners in the wet/ice?

If its driven in a normal fashion and like a normal car its no different in the wet than anything else :) Later models of S2000 have their own form of traction control as well, with a budget of 11-12k you could find an 05/06 or newer one as well!

I wonder if anyone can help with the following questions please?

1. Should I go for the Roadster or Coupe?

2. The 1.8T or the 3.2 V6?

3. Are there any issues with the DSG gearbox in the 3.2? I have found a really nice 04 example for £11k but I am concerned it may cost me in the long run. Would something like the Tesco warranty help?

4. What is servicing / maintenance like on the Audi? I realise it will be a huge step up from the 04 Punto but a rough idea would be useful. I am going to go to my local garage tomorrow to get a feel for it.

1. Depends on whether you're gay or straight.

2. Depends on whether you're rich or poor.

3. No, and yes. Remember though, DSG is still too young a technology to have shown up any long term or high mileage problems.

4. Megawonga.
