Audio newbie, is an amp a necessity for new speakers?

OK thanks cool, I have something to aim for now at least :) I see what the other posters meant though about the easiness of the situation by having one device - an AV receiver to do it all. My problem with them being that they're either too expensive or too big for my cabinet
 
I came across that one when researching before posting, looks really good for my situation, even so - I am finding it hard to justify £220 + speaker costs for something I haven't actually heard myself the difference (if that makes sense)
 
IMO go to Richer Sounds and ask to listen to some setups, they'll give you as much time as you need and you'll hear the difference on even cheapo hardware.
