Fisichella in 2005 and DC in 2003, IIRC.

I started looking at just Australian GP's, but that hasn't always been the first race of the season for the last 12 years.

. I should have known that too, as Vettel couldn't have won as the only time he lead the 2010 championship was at the end of the final race.

So in that case, all but 3 of the winners of the first race of the season have won the championship in the last 12 years. 75%.

Just from that the odd are heavily weighted that almost 3/4s of the time the winner of the first GP wins the title, unless your DC and everyone laughs and puts their money elsewhere.

If I ever get bored I will go back to the first race

If you get really bored you could look at weather the eventual WDC was on the podium in the first race. I did it for the last 12 and the only time the WDC wasn't on the podium was 2003 where MSc came 4th.

I did have a quick look and:

Prost 2nd in 89, JV retires in 97, Mika retired in 99, MS was 4th in 03, Alonso was 3rd in 05, Vettel 4th in 2010 but I think he slowed through a 'spark plug problem'.
