EDIT: Also check out this review comparing the Asus D2X (D2 pci express equivalent), Asus DX, Creative X-FI Xtreme Music and Realtek onboard:

For a htcp pc I would recommend the:
Asus Xonar D2 7.1 PCI -

Or the new up and coming
Asus Xonar DX 7.1 -

Both produce very similar quality to eachotehr, with the former being PCI and the latter being PCI-E using a 1x slot, also requiring a floppy power cable since the slot doesn't provide enough power. I got my Asus Xonar D2 PCI on wednesday and all I can say is, good bye Creative
It replaced my X-FI Xtreme gamer for both games (obviously) and music, possibly moveies. It absolutley beats the crap out of my old X-FI, specifically in these areas:
> Vista x64 support - so much better than Creative, no hassle at all.
> Music and games sound quality is fantastic, don't be disuaded by the lack of 'real' EAX5 support, the Asus's emulation sounds no different and everything is much clearer and more noticable, no extra sounds are left out.
> The software package is excellent (for the D2 atleast), it has just about every port except optical output, but I can live with that seeing as I use my Z5500's on analogue.
> I no longer have popping, cracking, skipping of music or the notorious scream of death that my X-FI was producing fairly consistanly once a day..requiring hard reboot..
All in all, the Asus Xonar D2 or DX would be a great buy, I'm not saying don't buy the Prelud, but it's still only an X-FI with upgraded parts and modified Creative drivers.. plus the Xonar looks so much cooler, except the DX
But with either Asus you'd save £30 or £60 and price to performanc, both Asus's are equal... In the end, it's your choice, but if you want to save money, go Asus
