From a quick google on several popular every day cars like the ford galaxy, vw passat, etc. lot of late 90s, early 00s 1.9-2L engines on popular vehicles range from about 89BHP to ~143BHP I think 150 is quite opptimistic for an average.
 
There are so many wild cards, working out the exact figure would take a very long time. 51,000ish cars with multiple engine sizes. The list is full of cars like 1.6 tubro’s which probably produce as much power a majority of the 2.0’s and a bunch of big engines which probably don’t produce much power at all.

It would be interesting to know bhp per ton as im sure this will chuck up a very different result and be much more relevant in terms of actual power.
 
Well in our house hold we've 5 cars, 50bhp, 105bhp, 140bhp, 180bhp and 343bhp. Average is 164 so that's my guess :-)

Doesn't really help but thought I'd put it.
 
I've calculated this before and it's about 115 HP, but I'll do it again later.

EDIT: I actually calculated the average of new cars being sold, rather than that's out there already.
 
I can probably do the numbers for the past 10 years or so, which'll be the vast majority of the parc.

EDIT: I have from March 1999, so 13.5 years-ish.
 
You have to think about the following things really.

Most new German saloons are 1.8s or 2 litre diesels. Around 150hp
Most new hatchbacks are 1.2 or 1.4 either one will be less than 90hp.
Most new superminis are about 1 litre and 65hp

This is assuming every car is brand new.
If you did the same for cars 15 years old or more then you would find the saloons to be about 115hp on average
The hatchbacks 70hp ish
And the superminis about 55hp

Consider how popular the Ka is as well. They are what 60hp?
Then you have 106s with 1.1s
There's just no way the average is 100hp plus
 
Of the last 6.7 mn cars registered in the UK (3.5 years), the average power is 121 HP.

EDIT: Going back to the last 8.9 mn cars registered in the UK (4.5 years), the average power is 122 HP.
