So your not going to listen ? I would SERIOUSLEY consider what you are doing before you sign on the dotted line.

Dude i have listened and i apprieciate what people are trying to do about how it loses value etc. but at the end of the day EVERY car loses its value, so it makes no difference to me

You are paying a 5 figure sum for a very bland boring car which everyone and there brother owns.

As far as im concerned its far from a very bland and boring car, and surely its a good sign if everyone has one? vauxhall must be doing something right.

Sam said:
Your going to have to own it for the life of the finance ( unless you decide to pay it off in a lump sum )

Your point? The ONLY reason im changing my current car is because of the problems it has, otherwise i would keep it until it hit or someone hits me or it dies completely.

Have a look around at some 04 / 54 / 05 / 55 plate astra's, you will still get your brand new astra feeling with warrenty etc but that initial lump of depreciation will be gone.

Like i say all cars lose their value, all the time, so the fact that the depreciation will be gone doesnt bother me.

Im 18 also so dont think im an old man and i wouldent EVER think of buying a new car. Ever ever ever ever EVER lol

well when your dad runs a salvage yard so all your used to is a second hand car which is falling to bits its like heaven when your in a new car lol you really do apprieciate it.

I'll be the even older old man here!

Save yer money and put a deposit down on a house!!

Your only young once, we all make mistakes, and we all learn from them!

Might as well get that "i need a new car" out your system now! And when your older you too will be trying to tell people not to buy a new car!

Anyway, your going to be in full time employment for a loooooong time now, live rich whislt you still have the chance!

I like the new astra anyway, its got a good looking edge compared to the bmw and audi, its a shame that soo many people have the new astra they "become" too common.

Good luck :D

i like the way this man thinks your hired!!!!! :p

lol! i charge £20p/h min!

But what fox is saying is correct, and being so young you will be going to a lot of changes to an adult (sound corny!), and you will notice that priorities do change and your general outlook on real life will change dramatically.

Would you really be wanting to be tied down to a car for such a long time?

How long will you stay at your current job?

Do you like your current job?!!

If things do go all pete tong, have your realistically got a backup?

All these plus many factors can justify your decission.

Remeber, young people (like me!) dont like being tied down to such responsibilites! I like to have money to do random things, like holidays, big spends, will you be able to do such things once you pay off your car each month?

Remeber, the payment of the car is not the only thing your going to pay.

Also, being a new car, you will never have them stories about your first car being an absolute dog! And the fun you had with such an old banger!

Still, as a first car very nice!!

I understand what you are saying

so lets answer your questions

How long will i stay at my current job - as long as needed

do i like my current job - yes i do but currently doing a cisco course then hopefully going somewhere with that

have i realistically got a backup? - yes

i started full time work at 15 and i no what you mean have the money there to buy random useless crap and spend it on whatever i feel etc. and ive been saving my money for awhile now so i wanna spend it on something nice

also my parents filled my childhood with such a great life ive got hundreds of storys i could tell you all and ive had a lot of laughs in my current car aswell

yeh the car isnt the only thing i pay, i pay for the broadband, and my contact lenses

and ive been messing around with cars since a very young age so old bangers i dont mind but brand new cars arent that often in my family as everyone normally gets a car from the yard.

:)

i apprieciate that you guys are trying to help i really do, but i have been thinking about this for a week now, all the "what if's" etc and i really do want to go ahead and do this. and ive just got a test drive in a SXI tomorrow and if i like it i am going to order one and i really do hope that you all can apprieciate the fact that im getting myself a very nice car and that when the thread with pic's arrive you all go nice buy or nice car etc and not go, "so you've driven it home and its now worth about 9k yeh?"

That cool, looks like your really have thought about it!

And i can imagine, having played around with something for a long time (i.e. cars) you just want something nice!

Fair play, and hopefully you wont have to wait for longer than a month!!

You getting a 3 or 5 door? And what colour too? What about navigation, didnt vaxhall give away free navigation systems?

its gonna be a 5door, (spent 2 days deciding lol) going for the 5door because i am the only one of my mates who can drive so its nice they just all pile in without fuss. Colour i wouldnt mind a dark blue, i would go for black but it shows everysingle speck of dirt and every single nick lol, as far as navigation if the worst comes to it my mum has a tom tom go i can always errr....borrow when needed hehe, ill ask about the satnavs they were giving away, or see how much it is to get one built into the car

yeh hopefully i wont have to wait longer than a month probably depends on the colour

I just hope his parents dont let him do this, evan tho im 18 i know my dad would try everything in the book to stop me. Because he would know that a few months after i bought it i would hate it and want to get something else.
Sam

your all forgetting i havent even driven the bloody thing yet, i might not like it, you just dont no.

ok and ive spoken to my parents and they are ok with it. and if you think its bad parenting then keep your comments to yourself, i have come to an agreement with my parents if something goes wrong don't you been worried, its all been well thought out.

like i say the only reason im changing is because my car has a lot of problems, that arent worth fixing. otherwise i would keep it and keep driving it until i run it into the ground

I think this proves it, really. All of your mates are piling in your car because only you can drive. I know what it's like. You're excited.

"I'm getting a new Astra! Definitely!" Repeat every day for a month.

"where's the Astra?"

"Testing it tomorrow!"

"Nice one! Everyone! He's getting a new Astra!"

You'll have that sinking feeling when you sign on the dotted line. I really shouldn't do this... Sack it, I've already told everyone I'm getting one.

Please, tell me I'm wrong. But I've been exactly the same before. With minor purchases in comparison to a car, but in relation to my wage packet at the time, they were far from minor. I've regretted every one of them.

This is that situation 100x.

ok if you think people use me as a taxi service thats complete crap, i give my friends a lift because i offer, and they also give me petrol money aswell, even though i dont ask for it. ok and even i had told everyone im getting one then decide against it i would just tell my mates and everyone i decided against it and if they go well you said you were getting one, ill just say well now im not.

i won't go along with it because i've told everyone, ill get the car if i like it and want it, not because others want me to get it. simple as.

So, drive the new Astra. Then say thanks, leave the showroom, and drive the new Focus. Then pop to the VW dealer, and drive the Golf. Then call into Seat and take out a Leon, etc.

Do not make a decision until you've driven the competition.

dude i have driven the competition.

my dad owns a salvage yard 9 times out of 10 i get pickings of what to drive around the yard, infact i have driven the leon and loved it insurance is like 3800 on it though otherwise i would lean towards it, i think the focus is just puss - including most fords - golfs are lovely but starting at 25k.....errr no.

and for all you ford huggers out there if others like the focus then yeh good for em, don't blame them i can see how they are a really nice car i just think its horrible and i just generally don't like fords

jonarob said:
Too much effort fox, he's spent a week thinking about this!

edit: didn't say you were a taxi, mate. I just know the position you are in. I've been there. And the last thing I would have ever done in that position was admit it.

i no its just coming to the end of a busy day, luckily it was moslty internet based so i could check on here :)

[TW]Fox said:
You drove them around the yard?

Err, dude, go and take a PROPER drive.

how on earth can you say that?
you dont no how big my dads yard is? so how can you possibly say go take a proper drive? for all you no its could be 5 miles long and plenty of opportunities to corner and drive about and for the record its almost 5 miles square

His mind was made up before he even started the thread. There's no changing a mind like that.

exaclty, i started this thread asking for advice on what to ask and look for during the test drive not everyone and their mothers opinion whether or not i should get it.

Stringy said:
. We're just trying to help you out.

ok and like ive said 3 times now i apprieciate that, but iirc the original topic of this thread was answered about twice, then everyone came on trying to help me, when can't you and everyone else see that i was simply not asking for that? and don't want it?, call me whatever you like but i came in here with my mind set on what car i want and just asked a simple freaking question

and for that matter my mind stll set on the astra, its not gonna be changed, so you might aswell not bother, now why don't you all either go away or actually talk about what this thread was to be discussed about

jonarob said:
The reason everyone has gone off on a tangent in this thread is because you've struck a nerve. The wealth of knowledge, experience and general know how in the motors forum has its ears pricked up.

They heard "new" and "astra".

lol

or maybe its because the words

"new" and either "ford" or "bmw"

werent mentioned :p ;)

You are 18 and think you know everythingWe were all the same.

for one i no i don't no everything, hence the original starting of this thread. =

[TW]Fox said:
Unfortunately in a few years time you'll realise actually you knew nothing and you made a huge mistake.

you can't say that, as in 3 years time, you or any of the others can't say what'll happen because nobody knows yet, i might realise i did something stupid or i might still be very happy with the car.

[TW]Fox said:
This thread is littered with posts by yourself which do nothing but shout 'I know nothing about buying cars'.
this thread is also littered with people trying to tell what to do when it wasnt even asked for.
Fox]] of course your belief that an Astra is easily insurable whereas the same spec Leon would be 4 grand.
