First Choice does seem to be doing quite well for me at the moment.
In what way would you say the charter planes are better? I've flown in economy through to first in the likes of BA and Virgin, but never been on a charter flight.

more legroom mainly, first choice, thomson, thomas cook etc have 33 inch pitch as opposed to 31 on Virgin and BA, doesn't sound a lot but it makes a difference
we usually use premium which is 36 on charters and 38 on scheduled but charters charge around £200 each and the scheduled about £400
most charter planes use 767s with 9 or 10 seats across ( 9 on a FC place , 10 Thomson and I think 10 on TC ) where BA use 9, most of the extra space seems to be from narrower ailses though, FC and Thomson planes are used on both FC and Thomson packages

Thats for him and his GF though, so he's spending about £1750 each which is about par for the course for a non European trip. Mind you I'd want 2 weeks for that, especially with some of the distances involved!
I did 16 days in California and Nevada including rental convertible and all food, accomodation and Grand Canyon flights for £3200 for both of us to give you an idea of the sort of thing you could get for the money. I know it's not a chill-out trip but it does make a week in a hotel somewhere look quite poor value.
£5.4k for both of us but that doesnt include her flights as she was already there and stayed there a bit longer when I went back.
That was 6 weeks - accomodation, food, other stuff, car hire, petrol, camper hire.
Planning it again when the dollar gets better
Oz was loads better value than California but probably about 70% of the accomodation in Oz were hostels, which I guess explains it.

We went to the Xanadu in June - it was okay but I wouldn't recommend it in Feb/March.
For that sort of budget, my vote is South Africa. It is beautiful that time of year, and with budget you could do quite a lot. Safari, Cape Town, Zulu land etc. Lots to see and do, and plenty of 30 degree + weather in Feb. We had the best time when we went. We went for a week. I'd recommend going for 10 days + if you wanted to do all the sites, but a week is fine for Cape Town or other areas. Plus there's no jet lag!

The issue is that when I went, it was $2:£1 which itself is quite below the usual rate of $2.40ish.
It's now $1.50:£1 which is why I've not been back since. As soon as it recovers (if?) I want to go again.
