From a distance you dont see the digital smearing/mpeg effects. Sharp contrast and vivid colours though.

I mean PC Monitor TFTs... I guess its a slightly unfair comparison though as you're sat right next to a monitor but feet away from a TV...

However, I'm going to give the instructions here a go to see how much detail I can squeeze out of DVD sources...

As for DVDs yes there are a few tweaks and specialist software available see most SFFPC or HTPC sites forums for more info, like you have been doing. Im not quite sure where your going with this, you talking TVs here or a TFT monitor? Personally I find Power DVD adequete for what I need and looks great on most monitors. Its still going to look worse when you enlarge it to fullscreen, what do you expect.

Most advanced utilities like the guide you linked (seen it before)are to improve TV output/DVI output for pixel matching etc to projectors and a lot of USA Hi - DEF tellies for large screen home cinemas and not for direct viewing on TFTs. Very few true HI-DEF capable hardware is here yet, currently. People have been using Panasonics 500 DVI ready projector for this and getting great results but this is nothing to do with a TFT thread.

You're right, I'm not making much sense :D

And again, you're right, when you enlarge DVD outside their native resolution on a PC monitor there is going to be a visual hit.

I'm just looking for ways to minimise this as much as possible. There are varied opinions on the best DVD decoding software, but most differences are subtle. Post processing is an interesting option but as you note mainly directed at HDTVs.

Basically, its a good thing we have access to these georgous DVI TFTs and I look forward to filling them in the future full of content similiar to the Microsoft WMV9 Hi-Def demos :)

possibly, but the thing is they are really a little more specialised than the 17inch models and def in a higher price range......some ppl have done stuff about 19inch panels on these forums so if u do a search u might find some info on any in particular you're looking for. if they become a bit more mainstream then i can def put some stuff together, but finiding info and forum user comments on them is a little difficult atm until they become more widely used and available

Its widely known that the 20" Dell and its variants from Viewsonic and iiyama are currently of the best. Comments do seem slightly mixed on quality and dead pixel rate seems common.

Its a good unit but still considered failry budget against some other 20"+ panels. Id question their viewing angles and overall quality both in imagery and build against any high end 19" panel. Best to test one first hand to see if it suits your needs, everyones perceptions and requirements can differ.

Also if your buying from a Uk source thats typically 800+ for the iiyama and viewsonic, almost enough for dual monitors in 19" @1280x1024. Comparing shows its a lot of money to blow for an additional inch and using a 1600x1200 desktop where you could effectively have 2460x1024.

Problem:
Do these monitors scale well as tests have shown even with the newest cards in many upcomming games you will want to drop to 1280x1024 for the best framerate. Just consider this possibility as its much more productive to have dual monitors, looks a lot cooler gives much better value, with more benifits than drawbacks, certainly gets my vote anyways.

Samsung 172x

Hi all,

just to let you all know......spoke to my IT supplier today....about the 172x....it appears that Samsung have stopped suppling this model...no stock anywhere......it's unlikely that they have withdrawn it but that they are going to replace it with a new model.....name, number...???....who knows.......i see some online retailers are still advertising them......so there is some remaining stock........

got my lg1710s monitor, i think it's great.

great budget 16ms tft, are the b models that much better? .. cause this is great!!!!

cheers for all the help.

no problem mate :) only difference with the B models is the addition of DVI, if you have a decent VGA on your GFX card then it prob wont make too much difference anyway, but that's about it really, nice panel, glad you're a happy new member of the TFT club :D

Has always been the case since it was launched in the UK - only a few retailers are able to get stock, mostly imported rather than from Samsung UK. Thus, don't think it's an indicator of the model being discontinued/replaced or similar.

As great as the information in this thread is..I'm still bloody indecisive :D

Best 17in solely for Gaming anyone?

I'm thinking the Hyundai Q17 or the Hitachi CML174SXW2...as my first choice of Samsung 172x is practically the dodo of all monitors.

Or shall I just wait?

Sorry if this is a rerun of things already said but :p

lol, def a rerun of older questions.

- Sammy 172X has 12ms screen and like u say, hard to find anywhere :(
- Q17 and Hitachi have same 16ms panel in them anyway, so go for whichever u like the look of more.

pretty much all the screens mentioned in this thread perform very similarly anyway, ghosting is just not a big issue any more and a LOT of them even use the same panel in the TFT anyway. Base it on looks really. the 16ms AU panel, the 20ms Hydis panel, the 12ms Sammy and AU panels all perform very similarly, i doubt u would really notice any difference between them all. I suppose best for gaming and all round is prob the Q17 though atm, but like i say, most of the screens mentioned in this thread perform the same!

Quick question:

I've seen it explained loads of times but I never remember. A search didn't turn up anything. :o

How do you disable stretching of resolutions (below 1280x1024 in this case) to full screen? i.e. display something in 1024x768 on the screen as 1024x768 individual pixels centered on the screen with the excess pixels forming a black border. Using a 9700pro with th new omega drivers (ATI 4.6).

Thanks.

You know when you say here are the useful stickies that no one ever looks at, well I was nearly one of them. Was just about to post asking how to clean TFT's and thought, I will just look. Could have been a bit embarrasing had I asked the question. Good write up with great help for tft noob's

Using the standard ATI Catalyst drivers (I presume would be much the same for the Omega releases) the option is amongst the driver settings (right-click desktop, Properties, Settings, Advanced). Go to the 'Display' tab and select the 'FPD' monitor, then the 'scale image to panel size' tickbox entry.

This option only sort-of works for my TFT (Iiyama 481s) - 'standard' resolutions like 1024x768 are STILL stretched, but less common ones aren't e.g. 1280x960 (all are stretched when the option is set). Bit odd I know. Anybody know why? (when I have more time I'll perhaps look more into it).

Ah, thanks. It seems that my TFT is being picked up as a CRT in the top left box. Can't see the option you mentioned. The FPD item is disabled like the TV etc.

The TFT is using VGA, could this be it? Surely the border thing isn't only available on DVI - anyone care to comment? It must be possible to specify that the VGA out is going to a TFT. :(

Thanks.
