BAE Adaptive FLIR Camo (Quite cool)

Seriously???

Camouflage....
Identification....
Disguise....

Actually I think those were all mentioned in the video. You did watch it didn't you?

That video with no sound and a couple of phrases with no further explanation? Yeah I watched it.

For example how does this help prevent detection when the enemy has gen3/4 night vision devices? What identification benefit does it offer compared to iff?

I'm sure it has a niche or they wouldn't have bothered developing it in the first place but neither can I imagine its cheap enough to be widely used or reliable enough to go on fast moving vehicles on rough terrain.

Not quite sure what the point in the IFF is, unless they're hoping to stop the Americans shooting there own tanks.

Well to be honest considering they have shot up multiple vehicles of ours, its quite useful in that respect.

I know but do you seriously think an extremely expensive IFF would stop them? If you've got 1 of these in action you KNOW its in action because its going to be damn expensive. Unless BAE are taking back handers from the Taliban I can't see them fighting against them any time soon so the IFF won't be any use at all.

And isn't there always the possibility that you could use the technology to tell your enemies that you're friendly if you figure out what it relies on.

I don't see how it can even be used on running vehicles because of the hot exhaust gasses.

IR torches can accomplish the same thing for a tiny fraction of the cost anyway, there's nothing novel about this. Also it's vulnerable to any enemy just pretending to be friendly. At least electronic IFF uses authentication.

The only use I can see this having is the camouflage of stationary installations in locations where IR is the only viable means of detection, eg a forest.

That is incredibly clever and has many uses, you can completely change the IR signature of any object, or indeed make it disappear altogether.
