I'll be honest, the big difference seems to be the engine. It cant be a coincidence that is the two Ferrari powered bottom teams that are suddenly in the midfield and close to the Merc...

As surprising as it is, it feels like Mercedes have suddenly got the weakest engine and Ferrari have created a rocket ship of one. Pretty embarrassing that they have dropped the ball so much on the component that was their main strength for all these years.

I mean look at Williams, McLaren ad Aston Martin. They all look rubbish, and i think it is only the aero/chassi on the Merc that is keeping them in the game against that Ferrari engine
Spot on.

Max Verstappen?

It's inevitable, the greater driver is, the more they get a negative following.

It's worse if they are outspoken, or a little different.

Jenson Button wasn't an ass before and after he was #1. Nor was Lewis Hamilton in 2008/9/10/11/12 and to a degree he was more stable under Ron Dennis's reign. Even to a degree under Martin Whitmarsh. There was an entitlement slipping out of him during Whitmarsh's time near his end.

Where as Vettel started becoming annoying with his #1 finger everywhere after his first winning season and arrogance. A lot of people started taking to Mark Webber during that time.

I was a massive Vettel hater in his early years but he is about the most likeable chap on the grid now for me. He is one that has absolutely matured a lot over the years.

He’s been too focussed on Mercedes, meanwhile ferrari have been quietly working away.

Doesn't really make any difference. It's not like he could have prevented Ferrari developing the car it has regardless of what RB focused on.

Well that was interesting. Should have put a £5 on Leclerc to win the WDC this year, it’s do-able if Ferrari don’t drop the development ball (which I think they will).

I said last years and still feel the same this year, I Sainz IMO is likely to beat Leclerc over a season. Leclerc makes so many mistakes. Even here he almost took himself out in P3.

I wouldn't bet against Max for WDC though given Ferrari's traditional calls on strategy.

Also expect Lewis to be able to drag himself up to picking up podiums.

Finding an F1 driver annoying for celebrating a GP win by raising a finger is frankly childish.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with Vettel multiple times, having spent most of my career in motorsports. He’s truly a rare gentleman, an oddity in elite sport.

All elite sportsman have ruthless traits that show at one point or another. There’s a reason they’re better than 99.99% of others who aspire to be in their position. Honestly I find the pettiness amongst F1 fans to be quite embarrassing at times.

To be honest, i think it is how these drivers (or any top sportsman) can come across when at the top, and being fiercely competitive. That sort of environment changes someone.

When the driver's are nowhere near the top and just taking it easy like Vettel has been doing (ie much less pressure), they become much nicer people.

The ones you can tell are actually nice people are the ones that manage to reign it in somewhat, even at the highest level.

Yeah, Seb's a good example. A bit like Federer, class.

Even Seb was a bit a of an unlikable prat on occasion when he was on top though :p. He was never that bad though.

He was never as unlikable as Max though. I think Max might just genuinely be a bit of a ***** person to be honest. Probably why Horner likes him so much. Birds of a feather and all that....

He definitely has some arrogance about him but what probably makes it worse is that I doubt he gets reigned in by the RB management. Who at times last season probably even made him worse!

Well, if Lewis isn't winning it this year (which looks unlikely), I really hope it is Sainz in the Ferrari (or at least one of the Ferrari's).

I said earlier that i would be shocked if this was the case...well colour me shocked!

Ive not caught up with the results today or even watched much of testing etc but just looking at the results this does seem to be the case. It blows my mind if true though as Mercedes always made a solid engine even before becoming a world team. Still, it will be much more exciting if they can fix the issues and become the third team mixing it up at the front.

Am I imagining things.... are we really back in the game :) ? After...

... I need to sit down..... :D

Even tempted to take a subscription out! What offers are on to get Sky Sports F1?
If you’ve got an iPad just sign up to F1TV Pro with a Scandinavian VPN. £59 for the year.

Need to turn it on before opening the app to watch live tho.

He changed just before his move to Ferrari. He was very likeable in the Toro Rosso.

He was doing it everytime down the camera when it was on him after the second winning year. Everyone from Autosport to other motorsport forums were complaining about it back then. Including numerous diehard Vettel fans back then. I once remember Crofty mentioning the dislike when he was reading out the twitter responses during Qualifying during those times.

Another reason I despised F1 at times then when they were reading every bloomin response from twitter out to the viewers.

Even to the extent and it wasn't just because of that, the fans were booing him after races. For many races after the incident with them taking Webber's new wing during Silverstone and that crash in Istanbul. A lot of the fans really detested him for years after 2010. Then took to him again in the Ferrari years.

I honestly don't ever remember Mansell or Hill being like that of their generation?

Yeah I definitely hated Vettel back in the day. I seem to recall a turning point when he was on Top Gear? No idea, I was young and my memory hazy. There's every chance Max could mellow and turn into a relatively likeable person. But right now his face makes me want to smash it in, and when he opens his mouth I have to turn the telly off.

Well, violence seems to run in the Verstappen family. Anyone who grew up with a Dad that has been given a 5 years suspended sentence for fracturing someone's skull (jointly with his grandfather!?), then given a 3 year suspended sentence for assaulting his wife, then reportedly having assaulted his ex-girlfriend twice (once by running her over)... yeah that's going to rub off on you some what. And that's only the stuff that's known.

Honestly, I don't get the hype behind Max. It's taken him 6 years to win the championship. Lewis just missed his first title in his maiden year by a single point to Raikkonen, then took it in his second year. Now that is what you call natural talent.

Anyhoo, back on topic. I hope the new regs mean that anyone qualifying in the top 10 has an actual chance of winning the race. It'd be a shame to see Ferrari run off and do laps 1sec faster than everyone else.

Seb has a decent family upbringing though. Max's upbringing is from a wife beating psychopath so he is going to be a little extreme.
