Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro's memorable year has been marked with the award for European Footballer of the year.

Its not actually official yet is it? I read Calderon had 'said' it would be announced.

Wont be any surprise that he gets it in any case.

Glad to see that a defender can win the prize (assuming he gets it). Football is not all about attack after all. I think Henry and Eto'o will be a little gutted though to be honest.

It's an odd decision given that he played his club football for that year at a team who where relegated for matchfixing!! The crazy world of football eh!!

I would say it's based mostly on Italy's world cup win. I'm certain he would not be getting it had Italy been knocked out in the quarters.

i'm a man utd fan...... and Henry should have got it! instead give it to a defender because his team one the world cup... his club got demoted and fined for match fixing!

what a joke!

Doesnt mean he had anything to do with it though, to be fair how many people here watched Italian football on a consistent basis last year, he could've played his ass off for all we know

What an appropriate name you have ;)

To be fair Canavaro was outstanding for Juve last season. watched the few games they showed on bravo and I do keep abreast of what’s happening in Italian football too. He had nothing to do about the cheating that was going on, they just played the football. He was undoubtedly the best player in the WC and up to that point he thoroughly would deserve the gong. His move to Madrid is a different matter and he hasn’t quite found his feet yet.

Well based on this thread, the majority thought it would be Cannavaro.

Althought, I did I say that Stevie G should win it

Cannavaro is a great player but to me he is tainted to a degree.
Even though he was not responsible for the cheating he was still playing his football in an enviroment where his team was favoured by referee's.

Overall for me Eto'o would have been the choice CL and Spanish title and good form for the whole season. Henry was great but not great enough (even thought the gooner in me wanted him to win it)

hmmm yeah maybe i should change my name to 'ROONEY8' but then again i'm not aged 5 and that would be silly.

Canavaro is a good player, but he was playing in a team that match fixed! end of the story. As for the world cup he was good, but so were so many other players in the itie team, Piro? not sure how you spell his name was outstanding, the left back also had a blinder and Buffon did not put a foot wrong

Pirlo and Grosso?

This award could have and probably should have gone to Thierry Henry. But the unfortunate thing is that Arsenal didn't win anything last season.
