Ive recently been screwed around by the bank, and theyve caused a lot of problems for me. I asked to upgrade my cashcard to a debit card, no problems it came through the post the next week. i then got on with the christmas shopping and spent a bit of money online, about £120.

Christmas day i found a letter from them saying i was -£120, and that they were charging me £30 for an overdraft. I looked at my previous statements and i had more than enough money in to cover what i spent, then saw that there were two different account numbers, they had infact opened a new account with the new debit card. they are in the process of trying to sort this out and im simply refusing to pay the charges as i was never told that i was opening a new account.

I was wondering, i shredded my cashcard as i had no need for it, if i took in some statements and some ID, would i be able to withdraw some money from my old account?

Yes. Take some good i.d, passport, driving license and bank statement. Should be no problems. I would explain nicely to them in the bank what has happened, you may get a decent member of staff to refund the charges as well.

Which bank btw?

Yeah ive talked to them already, i was advised to ring the helpline, who then advised me to go into my branch  apparently the person who sorted out my new debit card is to blame, and will be lumbered with a charge. And this was at abbey national.

Have a moan at them. I know that my bank (The Co-Op) haven't given me overdraft charges on my personal account when I've overdrawn that, as my joint account is always in the black. Maybe it helps that we pay for an authorised overdraft on the joint account too...

Either way, have a moan. It's blatantly their fault.

Ask them to see the form that you signed. You always have to sign forms, so you would have either signed one for a debit card, or to open an account.
To open an account is probably mandatory!
