My mate said he transferred some money to my account using my sort code and account number. He did this around 1pm but i checked when i got home from work and it wasnt in. I rang the bank and they said transfers ususally register after 5pm but it still hasnt shown up.

Would money stay sort of 'in the middle' for a while before going in?

What would be the next steps to get it resolved, to ask my mate to show me proof he transferred the money to my account number?
 
If it's 2 different banks you're looking at 3-4 working days before the funds arrive. If it's the same bank and he did it via online banking they often delay the payment by 24 hours 'for security purposes'.
 
yep as adz says, if it's between diffrent banks treat it as a chequ, even between *** same bbank some take 24 hours, it's disgusting.

hsbc - hsbc is instant :)

That's not strictly true; over the telephone it can be instant or up to 2 business hours. If the transaction is being set up for the first time online it takes up to 24 hours to set up, but thereafter it is instant (it is for me and when I worked there it was!).

OP: Most of what's been said above sounds about right :)

I have to halifax accounts always takes 24hours to transfer between them.

online, not to bothered now, as I've pretty much closed the accounts(just keep them open for overdraft if some unexpected expenditure comes up), use just hsbc.
 
Last time I did a bank transfer it turned out to be a NatWest to NatWest and it took 24hrs to complete.
I've seen bank to bank transfers take a lot longer.

Fair enough. If your bank isn't working for you; move :).
 
I should just mention that, at least with Barclays, if the recipient is someone you've sent money to before, the transfer is quite literally instant. It's very convenient for regular payments.
