I'm a moderator on another forum and one or two members are starting to misbehave. They've been issued warnings and I'm looknig to ban one of them, but their IPs keeps changing all the time.

I've noticed that their address always ends 'dsl.bcvloh.ameritech.net'. However, how can I be sure that if I ban any new signups with this ISP that I won't be banning an innocent person? They have hundreds of posts where the IP changes all the time.

Is the IP range the same?

Ultimately you can't be sure you aren't limiting access for anyone else, but then, how many other people do you expect to sign up from that domain?

IP range? Hmmm not sure what this means, but here are a few IPs they have posted from.

If they are on dial-up then you don't have a fixed IP, they also could be posting from net cafes aswell. Just ban the user, forcing him to reregister. If they make a tit of themselves again, you know what to do. :)

i dont think you can actually ban them as they'll just come on the next day with a new ip..try deleting their account they will obviously create new ones but if you keep deleting the accounts im sure they'll get bored eventually..

Thats got nothing to do with whether the account is banned or not.

the rest of my post states that it wont matter if you ban their ip (if its a dynamic ip) or their account as they'll just come with a new ip the next day and create a new account unless its a private site where you need an invite to sign up..

Ban the IP range?

Tis what we do
Thats what I was thinking, but as the range differs every time she can't.

Aha this sound more like it. How do you decide what the range is or is it self-explanatory when you come to do it?
I'm afraid given their IP history banning IP ranges from their previous posts won't help.

Nice edit, but I'll let it slide and address what you've actually said this time.

Your first post stated 'i dont think you can actually ban them as they'll just come on the next day with a new ip'. As you'll have realised this is tosh because the account remains banned no matter what IP they visit the forum from. To move on further 'try deleting their account they will obviously create new ones but if you keep deleting the accounts im sure they'll get bored eventually..' this is now contradictory to your second post, addressing the point I'd made in my initial response to you.

Just admit you got it wrong, its easier in the long run :)

my point was that as long as they have dynamic ips you have no other choice but to constantly delete the accounts that they create until they get bored...might have been poorly worded in my previous posts but im sure some common sense wouldve helped out figuring out what i was trying to say..

Badly worded? Your post was diametrically opposed to your intent if thats truly what you intended. Not that I believe you, but thats unimportant :)
