Hey,

So I currently use my Intel Little Falls 2 machine (Dual Atom), with 2gb of RAM for a file server, some web development and other storage etc.

Anyway, looking to upgrade this, so I was thinking along these lines:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
4 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter ** £59.99 (£239.96)
1 x Intel Pentium G840 2.80GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £55.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01) £29.99
Total : £427.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Run it in Raid 5 or something, any suggestions/thoughts/ideas?

Also - is it wise having the RAID seperate to a boot drive?

Cheers

An alternative side, AMD:

YOUR BASKET
4 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter ** £59.99 (£239.96)
1 x Gigabyte F2A85XM-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 micro ATX Motherboard £58.99
1 x AMD A6-5400K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Dual Core Processor (AD540KOKHJBOX) £49.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TED38GM1600HC11DC01) £29.99
Total : £390.32 (includes shipping : £9.50).

What do people think? Also, anyone know which is more powerful? I'd assume the AMD but am not sure!

Unless you want to do on the fly media steaming (as opposed to just playing a file) then you don't need a very powerful (and hot) system.

For my main server I have

Asus E350 m/b with 6GB of DDR3 1333mh/z
OCZ Vertex3 Max ops 120GB
Highpoint 2640 raid 5 SAS/SATA card
4*WD Red 3GB Raid 5
2*WD RE4 2GB
Blackgold TV BGT3620 for network/internet TV recording.
Passive PSU
Fractal design noise proofed mid tower case
WHS2011

I also have a media server, again running WHS2011

Gigabyte A75 ITX MB
A6-3500 with stock cooler
8GB PC-1600
OCZ Vertex plus 120GB
Highpoint 2680 raid 5 SAS/SATA card
6*WD 2GB RE4-GP RAID0
Fractal design ITX case

The systems are on (or asleep) 24/7 so I have some expensive server HDD but the WD Red range are not that expensive and are designed up for 24/7 use in RAID.

Ok, well it's all ordered now :)

I went for the following:

Gigabyte F2A85XM-D3H AMD A85X Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 micro ATX Motherboard
AMD A6-5400K Black Edition 3.60GHz (Socket FM2) APU Trinity Dual Core Processor (AD540KOKHJBOX)
Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU)
4x 1TB WD WD10EFRX RED 24x7, SATA 6Gb/
350W Enermax NAXN ENP350AGT, Quiet
Zalman FAN MATE 2 Fan controller
Sharkoon 3-pin Y-Cable (Install x2
Lian Li PC-A04B Black Micro-ATX Mini

Bit of a messy post - not got it all from the same retailer so had to go for invoices.

But yeah essentially the AMD Trinity build with cheaper RAM, a nice & functional case and WD Red's :).
