As my gfx is about to prematurely go 'pop', I've been caught a bit short, meaning that I don't have any card related funds. Being the case, I can only afford a 5770 at the moment, which I would then accompany with another once I'm able to afford it. Would my PS allow this?

If you know of any better performing cards for the price (even it if means saving up) then please let me know!

Thanks

A 550W BeQuiet should easily handle a 5770. It's not a bad brand from what I remember, and the 5770 is hardly a beast when it comes to drawing power at load.

At a similar price point there is the nVidia GTX460 768MB which is generally a better card at most resolutions, but much better would be the GTX460 1GB for <£150. You also have to be careful with which 460 you plump for - the effectiveness (cooling and sound levels) for aftermarket cooling differs greatly between the different cards. Generally seen as best in this range for the price is the Gigabyte version - Clicky. The 460 should be fine on a quality 550W PSU

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your reply, mate.

Do you think that this 460 is 'too cheap'?

What I meant to put forward was whether or not my PS could supply two 5770's, or 460's for that matter?

Thanks again

I would suspect 2x 5770s in CF would be ok on a 550W PSU but whether you'd have enough connectors is another thing. I think 460s use more power than the really quite efficient ATI cards.

Unfortunately I can't advise you on the power draw of XFire card configs. I think that you should be okay with XFire 5770's with that PSU but probably not SLi 460's.

In terms of which 460 to get, the Palit ones really have a reputation for terrible cooling solutions, both loud and inefficient. Gigabyte and MSI are generally seen as the better brands, and well worth the added expense over the Palit/Gainwards.

The new cards take one connection, right? If so, then that is fine as I have two.

Ah gutted, just when you think that you have found a good deal! Will take a look at the brands that you mentioned.

Argh, now I'm starting to wonder if I should just be patient and save up for something big... Damn it!

What would you do?
