Hi

Thinking of getting a socket 939 Athlon X2 and getting a new CPU cooler at the same time. I've got a DFI NF4 Ultra-D motherboard, PSU in the typical top of the case position. The Ultra D has the CPU socket orientated like this:

All the best CPU coolers seem to be these big tower affairs like the Tuniq, Noctua NH-U12F and Thermalright Ultra-120.

  • What's the best one that's suitable for the orientation of the Ultra-D?
  • I'm seeing mentions of "back plates", etc. What are they and is that something I need to worry about?

Thanks

Because of the size of some of these coolers you need to fit a backplate, a plate that's fitted behind the CPU socket on the motherboard. This usually entails removing the existing mounting clip [big yellow thing around the socket].

These are really easy to remove so don't worry. Most if not all the HSFs come with good instructions and there is always us lot :D

As for what to choose that's up to you, I don't think any will have any problems on your board. Also, the high end coolers tend to have fans that you can reposition anyway :)

I had an SLI DR with both a Scythe Ninja (Revision A) and a Thermaltake Big Typhoon.

Both fitted without issues and ran my dual core Opteron 165 @ 2.8ghz (stock is 1.8ghz).

Have fun! :)
