Form and merit... I can only name a handful of young English players who've performed well this season. He's going to have a hard job if he does it like that!

Have you looked outside of the Premiership? Clyne, Zaha, Butterfield (if not injured), Matt Phillips, Jordan Rhodes, James Forrest, Adam Lallana, etc. Loads of British players who've performed well and should most definitely be picked for the squad.

I'd actually like to see a squad predominantly comprised of non-EPL players. I'd also like for the three over 23's to be the better performers in general, so people like Rickie Lambert would get a look in. Think it would be a lot more exciting! :) It would be so depressing if the squad was the bog-standard England U21 team with people like Wellback getting picked ahead of someone like Adam le Fondre who's had a really decent season.

The only problem with that is le Fondre is playing at Championship level and not getting started. Plus he's one of the most annoying looking people on the planet. I'd love to smash his ugly little face in.

Surely, given the nature of the competition, experience is key? Welbeck has been playing in the Prem, and likely as not in the Champs League too. You can't replace that experience in and around a Prem club, training with the likes of Scholes and Rooney every day, playing against the cream of European clubs with playing Barnsley, Coventry and Doncaster, and training with Brian Howard and Jobi McAnuff.

Agreed, he has a very annoying face. I've got to disagree with you though with regards to the experience comment - why does it matter? How well have British teams fared at tournaments over the past 15 years despite the wealth of Premiere League experience they players have. I unfortunately don't see how experience is relevant at all, seeing as it's impossible to qualify the role it's played in the Home Nations' underachievement at international level since the inception of the Premier League.

Although I think Wellbeck has every chance to turn into a great player, I'd rather see someone who's earned the right through their performances to be given a shot, rather than give the place in the squad to a player simply because of the club he plays for. I'd probably argue that given the opportunities in the Man Utd first team that Wellbeck has had this season, that Jordan Rhodes would have scored more times and contributed a greater amount throughout the season. Wellbeck went on loan to Preston last season and achieved sod all (i.e. it wasn't exactly the most successful of loan spells). If a player has momentum throughout the season, I believe they should be picked for an international squad based on their performances.

Personally, I'd think it would be amazing to see EPL, CH and L1 players all play in the same squad together! It would show a youth system which might just stand a chance of producing quality players. Some of the players that have played in International tournaments for England at youth level have been **** - take Blair Adams for example. He played in the U20 World Cup last year, probably on the basis that he's come through the youth team at a Premier League club (Sunderland). Having seen him play a number of times this season, I can safely say that he's found his level playing for a team three places off the relegation zone in League Two... but the guy has EPL and International experience, has been surrounded by top top player (arguably :D) and should therefore be an automatic pick for future international squads...?

Why don't the premier league teams pick these players then if they are so much better? Honest question, I would just assume that the better players would be in the better league.

No idea. Cost maybe? The fees touted around for a potential move of Jordan Rhodes were as much as Jelavic cost Everton if I recall correctly. Also, if you follow the transfer speculation of some of the players I've mentioned (Clyne, Zaha, Lallana, etc.) then there has been a great deal of transfer speculation about these players - and their respective clubs have fought tooth and nail to hold on to them. I fully believe that EPL clubs take many few punts/chances on purchasing players from CH, L1 or L2 clubs than they would have done during the Nineties - hence the amount of non-UK players playing in the EPL compared to 15 years ago. Just a theory though.

English players generally cost more and have lesser technical ability then players that can be 'shipped' in so to speak.

Yep it's down to cost, you see Championship clubs spending £5m on mediocre english players. Look how much it cost to land Chamberlain, a player who'd never played above League One level and cost £12m rising to £15m. Yes he looks a good talent but he certainly wasn't cheap! A teenger of similar ability/pedigree coming in from abroad would have likely been half the price.

While Olympic football is a joke, it just makes it an even bigger farce picking Beckham, he won't be going on merit, just on his celebrity.

So no.

So which Under-23 who isn't going to the Euro's (because which club manager is going to let their players do both?) would you give his place to?

He's still a great player and considering all the work he did for the Olympics bid he should get a spot.
