hello :)

Its been around 3 years since my pc was upgraded, and it's starting to struggle. (p4 nw es 3ghz@12x286, 512mb, radeon 9800). I'm looking at giving it to my dad and building a new system.

I'm looking at spending around £500 in total, and am looking at the graphics card first. I want this PC for playing FlightsimX and thats about it, it'll be used for net/work too - but that is hardly taxing is it.

I've been looking at the 7900 series GeForces. Are they worth getting, any particular brands to look out for. Are they any good. Do ATI have a better card in that price range. Is it worth spending a little more and getting the 7950?

Any help greatly appreicated.

Same here mate, I haven't upgraded in around 3 years myself. Recently ordered a load of bits just waiting for my board to come now. I have got a X1950 Pro 512MB sitting on my desk. They are very affordable and offer excellent performance! (£126-170 on OcUK)

thanks for the replies so far.

just looking at the HIS X1950 card. I reckon that plus an e6300, asrock945g mobo, 1gb ram.. it shold be 'ok' for a budget system. Do you think it'd be realistic to think i can play it at a 19"'s native res?

If its a 19" with 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 it should be perfectly feasible to play games like that, often with fairly high settings, including aa + af.

Hi there

Get yourself an X1950 Pro and 2GB of memory. This will transform your machine in every way and game will be in a different league. Put it this way any game your PC currently struggles will with, then with the above you can ramp graphic settings to maximum and experience fluid frame rates. :)

Agreed, x1950pro is an amazing card for the price, go for it. :)

i'm not keeping this current system, i will be building a new one.. though it does sound a bit whack when you look at replacing a 3.4ghz p4 with a chip running at a lower speed! (i know i know, clock speed aint all that.. but it used to be.. *remembers the days of 300a@450*.. anyway. yersh
