Been Offered Galaxy S to replace Desire - Would You?

I somehow managed to slam my HTC desire in my car door shattering it in the process...After fun and games with my insurance company, they have to replace it but don't have the Desire in stock and don't know when they will. They've offered me the 8GB Galaxy S as a compromise...

Would you accept this? I've been reading a number of reviews which basically say each have their faults but neither comes out on top! I loved my Desire when I had it but I don't want to be stuck with the Galaxy S if I hate it!

Your opinions on this would be great as I really cannot decide! Thanks!

Well it's personal prefrence.

Personally I prefer the Desire, but there isn't a lot in it. I would take a SGS, but not over the Desire, if you understand.

If that's all they have to offer then fair enough. But shouldn't your insurance have a like for like policy?

Galaxy on Paper is much better spec.

After playing with a friends I still felt the desire performed better for day to day tasks. The Galaxy Android has been made to look and feel like iOS.

They do and they will, if I don't accept this offer, get me a Desire. It's just they don't know how long that will take! I've been without the phone now for over a month and I'm getting Android withdrawl symptoms!

Well personally I'd wait for a couple weeks.
If you are desperate though, I doubt you will be disapointed in the SGS :)

In a heartbeat. And I have both.

What do you find better about the Galaxy over the Desire then? Is it the better quality screen or is there more to it?

This is what I'm tempted to do..If I get the SGS and I like it less than the Desire, I'll know what I'm missing out on! If I hadn't owned either before and got the Galaxy, I'm sure I'd love it!

i have this dilemma also... i want to upgrade my hero but what to go for... Desire or Galaxy S???

I went from Hero to Galaxy and glad i did.

Galaxy is better as it is faster.
Much much better screen
You can utilise the onboard 8gb memory to speed it along
Though i'd miss sense but i dont at all
lots of free software i find useful, even the games :)

Desire has a charging LED which i miss and a track ball which at first i misses dearly and still do sometimes.
you can actually get accessories for the desire but im having trouble buying decent stuff other than generic for my galaxy

One of my best mates has the desire and when playing with it i have to say i'm glad i went SGS
there are other reason which i dont have time for now

Wait until some firm news about the HTC Desire HD which we should soon.

And to the OP the SGS is a very good phone i doubt you're be dispointed unless you're one of these who get hard playing with sense then you might be disapointed, i'd say go play with one in a shop, the screen is amazing especially compaired to the new desires that comes with a LCD screen.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think I might try and get my hands on one this weekend to make the final decision then! I disabled sense on the Desire anyway for LauncherPro so I'd do that anyway I suspect on the Galaxy!

  • Obviously the SGS screen is better. Way way better than the Desires. Not just bigger, but clearer and brighter. Gave up using the Desire in direct sunlight.
  • Its faster. Both mine are on Froyo. With a few tweaks the SGS flies. I don't get much if any lag now on 2.2.
  • And it IS quicker in games, the GPU does help. The speaker is also clearer and I'd say the screens responsiveness is also superior.
  • Prefer the clean looks, lighter and thinner. Gorilla glass. And I don't think the SGS build quality is all that bad. I do have it in a protective case though, so I don't see the back cover which is frankly nasty. There's some nice replacement leather back covers I have my eye on. Bit expensive though.
  • More space, internal and external SD's
  • For my use the SGS lasts longer between charges, SGS standby is better.
  • Video. SGS video player handles everything, codecs - MKV's etc. 720P recording on the SGS owns.
  • Yeah Sense UI is better, blah blah, I'm not a fan. I much prefer LauncherPro with various apps, never looked back.
  • I get slightly better HSDPA reception on the SGS, only a bar or two. The SGS GPS does work on mine, never been an issue for sat nav etc. But side by side the Desire does find more satellites. See image below, amoled Desire btw. Not a LCD like the new ones.

Had both would take the GS over the Desire any day, if recording hd video is something you want the GS does it far better with a solid 30fps and looks great, the desire does a rather poor job.

The Galaxy S is the HTC Desire with better hardware (components, not build quality) at the compromise of considerably worse software.

As its Android, you wont be left wanting either way, so take the deal. :)

They're both good phones, the Galaxy S has better hardware but the Desire certainly isn't slow and can run anything thrown at it.

If the Galaxy S didn't feel so cheap (it feels the same in my hand as a Samsung Genio Touch that my Dad has) and TouchWiz was as good as Sense then I would have got one.

As said, they both run Android and are top end smartphones, so it's a win win situation.

My house mate has an HD2 and keeps asking how Android builds are getting on, but as I know he's not computer literate like me, the current Android builds wouldn't work well for him.
