Right, its been a while since I did a new build.

I've got a q9550, 4870x2, 4gb RAM and its getting a little old now

so below is my plan:

Intel Core i7-2700K 3.50GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £251.99
Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £144.98
Corsair Vengeance Blue 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B) £89.99
Corsair Hydro H80 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/LGA2011/AM2/AM3) (CWCH80) £69.98

VAT is being charged at 20.00% VAT : £94.72
Total : £568.34

Once the new stuff is in I wil sell the old and the 4870x2 to fund a new GFX card.

What do you think? what would you change and why?

I picked the above based on a rough price point and looking at the bundles ocuk do.

I'm at work so i'll keep looking but may not reply till tonight.

Thanks for your help.

That processor seems a bit over the top and the memory too a bit. Unless you plan on doing some video editing, CAD, databases etc then you wouldnt need so much memory and CPU power.

If its for home use (gaming, internet, documents etc), then personally I would get a cheaper CPU as they get replaced by a new model so quickly and less memory (8GB max), but its your money and those are good items you picked :)

I do agree about the RAM. it just seemded good vaule for 16gb.

Olny need it for Gaming and internet.

What would you swap it to then (ram/cpu)? TBH I was just thinking i7 might be over kill.

That would be more than capable for your gaming needs. Mobo still supports xfire/sli and is good at overclocking from what the reviews say......if you want to spend more on an enthusiast mobo that's upto you. 8GB of RAM is plenty for gaming, there is corsair RAM slightly cheap but i prefer how the kingston stuff looks. Seeing as you want the closed loop watercooler you dont need to worry really if the memory is low profile or not.

This is obviously much cheaper.....you also have an IGP so you can remove your GPUs to sell them and still get basic use from the PC. Once you have the cash/budget for a new GPU when can help you pick one then drop it in :) You should start a thread in the members market to see what those GPUs of yours are worth

I myself have been out of the building game a while too, but after reading around these forums I see most people are advising the i7 or i5 now, so it seems maybe you are better off getting the one you listed or go for a slightly cheaper/lower speed one or an i5. Personally I think spending anything over 200 pounds for a CPU is a bit much considering how quickly they are replaced with newer faster models, but upto you :)
