(that's in Bulgaria, before anyone gets any silly ideas :p)

Going there for some meetings in the not-too-distant future, and would like some idea of what to expect. My European travel knowledge extends to France, Germany and Holland, and that's all, so I'm sure there's going to be plenty of new experiences. :D

Doubt I'll get much time to sightsee but any tips are better than none. :)

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any guidance.

Only been once before myself and I loved it, it's a great city. If you're interested in history and architecture then a visit to the Boyana Church should be on the books.

Oh yeah, beer is also very cheap indeed in Bulgaria too. :D

Go to this Cathedral, it is simply stunning

Just don't try and take pics inside, the priests get very upset!

The beer is great, and as a side note, the BEST ever Mcdonalds I have ever had was in Sofia  and was £1.29 for a big mac meal super size

The soon-to-be wife is originally from Sofia, last few years I have spent quite a lot of time there. It depends on what you are looking for, a lot of people dislike it and a lot of people love it.

Personally I really like it, cheapest city in Europe by far!!

Yuck why would you a) have McD's and b) go a thousand miles away to have McD's?! :p

I've Only been to the coast in Bulgaria, but if it's anything like some of the other rustic towns that Bulgaria has to offer then I'd say there's a lot of history and architecture to see. The people in general are nice and welcoming, but there are some very very deprived places and there are a lot of political issues going on behind the scenes too. It has a feel of some sort of gothic eastern european feel, but it feels middle eastern at the same time with some soviet feels to the place. It's an intriguing place.

I know, sounds sad, we were traveling back from Borovets, and the people I was with, one of them wouldn't eat anything else, and I was starving. I wasn't disappointed, it was a tasty burger :)

Its very nice but there are some dodgy places and some places look rough - seem odd to see basement liquor shop where you buy alcohol through a window 12"x6", right next to 4 star hotel.

Very meditteranean feel and diet which most signs in bulgarian and cyrilic. Might be going back in 2008 and looking forward to it (even if it is work)

Watch when you cross the street the drivers are crazy. The city is quite rough in some places.. it's very cheap though. If you like culture and don't mind rough edges you'll like it the food is great too. There is a lot of beautiful women there as well.. well in my oppinon.

Thanks. I have enough trouble crossing the road as it is.

These meetings are going to be fun - two Bulgarians, an Italian, a Brit (me) and an American. Some combination there. Still, I'm only there for three days and won't have a car so my exploration options are rather limited. I'll bear them in mind though. :)

Now to go reasing up on currency, tips, that sort of stuff (already done the FCO and health thing). :)

Havent been to Sofia for ages but I have been hearing that its getting miles ahead from the rest of the country. Apparently the city is expanding like mad(currently a fifth of the whole population lives there) and unemployment is pretty low though prices are also rumoured to be overtaking the rest of the country due to the balooning property/renting prices. Still far from the London standards though.
